St Lawrence Spurs inflicted a heavy defeat to Qala Saints and earned three more points which puts their minds at rest from the third spot on the final standings. The Spurs seemed over confident during the first half but corrected their behaviour as time passed by so they turned the result in their favour before the end of the first half and converted their superiority by scoring three more goals after the break.

As expected St Lawrence took command of play from the early stages and on 12 minutes they could have opened the score when Christian Grima was unmarked in the area but his lob over the goalkeeper ended just wide. On 21 minutes Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb was well placed to save a low shot by Charlon Farrugia and on 24 minutes Qala surprised their opponents when Oliver Farrugia received the ball just outside St Lawrence’s area and placed in goal as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger. The Spurs were not demoralised but increased their pressure on Qala’s rear guard. The Spurs levelled the score on 39 minutes when Louis Buttigieg passed to Muda Fagbeja just outside the area and the latter surprised Qala’s keeper with a fine strike. The Spurs took the lead two minutes later through a header by Simon Sultana following a free kick by Charlon Farrugia so that the first half ended with St Lawrence in the lead.

The Spurs continued to dominate play after the break and on 50 minutes a lob by Jason Theuma following a clearance by Qala’s defence ended wide. Qala tried to share more play with sporadic actions towards St Lawrence’s area but the Spurs were solid at their defence and protected their area from any danger. The Spurs also managed to increase their lead during Qala’s best patch of play, with a goal that arrived on 79 minutes, when a strike by Christian Grima hit the post and from the rebound Charlon Farrugia placed easily in goal. On 83 minutes Qala’s defence failed to clear the ball from the goalmouth following a melee so that Charlon Farrugia took the ball and unmarked substitute Adrian Xiberras who pushed the ball in goal from close distance to make it 4-1. In the third minute of stoppage time St Lawrence scored their fifth goal when a free kick by Muda Fagbeja hit the crossbar and from the rebound Charlon Farrugia headed in goal.

Referee: Andrew James Sammut
