SUMMARY

In the only match of the preliminary round of the BOV GFA Cup between two teams from the lower category, Sannat Lions obtained a 2-1 win over St Lawrence Spurs.  With this result Sannat Lions, who are currently being considered as favourites for promotion, became the only team from the lower category who joined the top teams of the first division in the quarter finals of the competition. In this match Sannat were more offensive in their play and managed to obtain the win with two goals scored during the second period.  Sannat also managed to resist to St Lawrence’s reaction in the final minutes of the encounter. In the quarter final stage Sannat Lions will meet Xewkija Tigers.

TIMELINE

Sannat, who already defeat St Lawrence in the match between the two teams of the division II campaign, tried to be more aggressive but the Spurs resisted well during the opening minutes and also shared more play as time passed by.

7’ Sannat had an attempt directly form a free kick by Lucas Silva Gomes that was neutralised by goalie Angelo Brignoli

14’ St Lawrence produced a good move but a close ranged attempt by Charlon Tabone who was unmarked inside Sannat’s area was well blocked by goalie Matthew Muscat.

29’ St Lawrence were again dangerous through another effort by Charlon Tabone but the striker on this occasion saw his shot from an ideal position that ended wide.

33’ Sannat’s goalie Matthew Muscat was called to make an important intervention to neutralise a shot from outside the area by St Lawrence’s Charlon Farrugia.

39’ Sannat could have opened the score when Ebube Ralph Okpokwu headed inside the area following a corner kick by Christian Debono but Antoine Camilleri’s header was turned to another corner with an excellent save by St Lawrence’s goalie.

Sannat took the initiative of play from the early stages of the second period.

49’ Ebube Ralph Okpokwu entered St Lawrence’s area from the left flank but his attempt form an angled position was stopped by the post.

57’ St Lawrence lost a good opportunity to open the score when Matthias Michael Uzor headed wide from an ideal position following an inviting cross by Christian Grima.

61’ (1-0) Sannat opened the score when Ebube Ralph Okpokwu headed inside St Lawrence’s area a corner kick by Christian Debono and defender James Grima headed badly in an attempt to clear the ball from the goalmouth so that he ended up committing an own goal.

63’ St Lawrence’s goalie Angelo Brignoli was well placed ad managed to neutralise a low shot from outside the area by Lucas Silva Gomes.

65’ Sannat protested for a penalty, alleging handling when Ebube Ralph Okpokwu’s effort to pass inside the area was blocked by St Lawrence’s defence.

72’ Sannat could have doubled the score but a low shot by Lucas Silva Gomes following a low cross by Ebube Ralph Okpokwu ended wide.

74’ St Lawrence’s keeper Angelo Brignoli kept his side in contention when he managed to block an attempt by Antoine Camilleri who came face to face with the goalie after turning around his direct opponent.

75’ Sannat once again threatened St Lawrence’s rear guard through a shot by Lucas Silva Gomes that ended high.

77’ (2-0) Sannat’s Ebube Ralph Okpokwu entered St Lawrence’s area with a personal action but he had his attempt partially saved by goalie Angelo Brignoli and from the resultant melee Antoine Camilleri pushed the ball in goal.

80’ (2-1) St Lawrence re-opened hopes to recover the deficit as they reduced the arrears through a free kick by Charlon Farrugia that got a deflection by the wall and the ball ended out of the reach of the goalkeeper.

89’ Sannat could have sealed the win with another goal when Ebube Ralph Okpokwu entered St Lawrence’s area with a personal action but he had his shot aimed towards goal that was blocked to a corner by central defender Daniel Micallef
