MATCH REPORT

SK Victoria Wanderers defended their division I status for another season with a 2-0 win over the runners up of the second division Sannat Lions in the play-off for a place in the top flight next season.  The match was characterized by a player sent off from each side, in separate actions, during eh opening stages of the first half and with two decisive goals that arrived during eh final stages of the first half.  The Wanderers as expected produced more dangerous play and could have added more goals during the second period but in more than one occasion the striker were erratic or found Sannat’s substitute goalkeeper at the right place to block the danger.

Sannat seemed more determined during the opening minutes of the encounter and produced the better scoring opportunities.  In the fourth minute of play a header by Franci Kosova following a cross by Oliver Farrugia ended high and one minute later a shot by Joseph Zammit ended away from Victoria’s goal.  The Wanderers replied on 10 minutes with a personal action by Ajibade Adesina who was floored outside the area by Sannat’s goalie Owen Attard. Sannat’s keeper was sent off for his action and from the resultant free kick Abdullahi Ige’s attempt ended high.  The Wanderers tried to take advantage of the extra player on the field of play but failed to create danger on Sannat’s goal. On 25 minutes the Wanderers were also reduced to ten players when Ian Xuereb was sent off by the referee for foul language. However, the Wanderers continued to enjoy more possession and on 25 minutes a direct corner kick by Anthony George Attard ended on the roof of Sannat’s goal.  Two minutes later a low shot by Victoria’s Ajibade Adesina who was released inside Sannat’s area by Nicholas Vella ended wide and on 28 minutes a strike by skipper Chris Sciortino following a short clearance by Sannat’s defense from a corner action, was well saved by Sannat’s substitute goalkeeper Leonard Camilleri. The Wanderers opened the score on 37 minutes when Abdullahi Ige won a ball from Sannat’s defense and from his low cross Anthony George Attard fired in goal with a low shot.  In the first minute of stoppage time before half time Victoria’s Jesus Guerrero had a header from a good position ended wide.  The Wanderers scored their second goal one minute later through a spectacular strike by Nicholas Vella from outside the area, after receiving from Abdullahi Ige, that surprised Sannat’s goalie.

Sannat’s reaction after the break was sterile and then Wanderers controlled their lead with authority and on more than one occasion they went close to add more goals.  On 49 minutes an attempt by Abdullahi Ige following a good action by Chris Sciortino ended high ad two minutes later the same Abdullahi Ige had a shot form a good position that was partially saved by goalie Leonard Camilleri and from the rebound Ajibade Adesina concluded in goal but the referee disallowed for an offside infringement.  Sannat’s keeper Leonard Camilleri was again well placed on 55 minutes to block a good effort by Abdullahi Ige following a personal action and same Victoria’s striker was unlucky two minutes later when his attempt from a good position was stopped by the post. Victoria’s Abdullahi Ige continued to be a continuous threat to Sannat’s defense and on 63 minutes the striker had a shot from a good position that ended high.  Victoria could have scored the third goal on 73 minutes but a close ranged shot by Ajibade Adesina was neutralized by Sannat’s keeper Leonard Camilleri. The same goalkeeper was again called to make a good save one minute later to block a shot by Milos Vasiljevic and on 80 minutes Sannat had their best opportunity to reduce the deficit but a header by Franci Kosova following a cross by Joseph Zammit ended wide. On 90 minutes the Wanderers lost another good scoring opportunity when Abdullahi Ige exchanged the ball inside Sannat’s area with Nicholas Vella but the former saw his attempt that ended just wide.

MATCH REPORT

The last match of the BOV Gozo Football League division II campaign for the 2017/2018 season, played at the Gozo Stadium, ended with a deserved 3-2 win for Munxar Falcons over their rivals, and contenders for the main honour, Sannat Lions.  With this result Munxar became champions of the category and won promotion to the top flight next season. This last match turned out into a decisive encounter to establish the champions of the category and the promotion issue. Munxar needed at least a point form this match while Sannat could have earned the title and promotion with a win over the same Munxar.  Munxar put their minds at rest from achieving their objective by opening a comfortable three-goal lead during the first quarter of the playing time. Munxar therefore administered play for the rest of the encounter so that they not only earned the point they needed to become champions but also registered another win over their rivals. The Falcons also remained unbeaten from all matches played against Sannat and also ended the campaign with a tally of 50 points.  Thus, the title won by Munxar at the end of the championship was well deserved as they were in the top positions throughout the campaign, managed to recover immediately after difficulty moments and above all they were always in a better form than Sannat in all direct clashes. Munxar ended a very successful season by winning the double, as they were already winners of the Knock Out competition for the category with a victory in a penalty shootout against the same Sannat.

Sannat tried to be offensive in their play during the opening minutes and in the third minute of play they were dangerous through a shot by Fabian Xuereb that was neutralised by goalie Lorjean Xuereb.  Munxar opened the score in their first serious action within Sannat’s area that arrived on 9 minutes through Michael Mattias Uzor who controlled the ball inside the small area following a cross from the right flank by Ryan Meilak, turned around his direct opponent and placed easily in goal from close distance.  Sannat were shocked and three minutes later Munxar doubled the score with a low drive by Jordi Parnis following a personal action from the left flank.  On 15 minutes Sannat replied with a strike by Mohammed Senussi Telessi that was saved to a corner by goalie Lorjean Xuereb and from the same corner kick by Matthew Portelli, Mark Muscat headed inside the area abut Antoine Camilleri effort was saved to another corner by Munxar’s keeper.  Munxar punished Sannat for the missed chance with the third goal that arrived on 19 minutes when a shot by Paul Said was partially saved by goalie Owen Attard and from the rebound Michael Mattias Uzor concluded easily in goal.  Sannat tried to produce a reaction during the final stages of the first half and on 34 minutes they were dangerous through a shot cross by Frankie Camilleri that was well saved by goalie Lorjean Xuereb.  Two minutes later an attempt by Oliver Farrugia ended just high and on 41 minutes a free kick by Mohammed Senussi Telessi just missed the target. Munxar replied one minute later through a personal action by Jordi Parnis but the striker saw his shot from an angled position that ended on the side of the net.  Sannat went again close to scoring on 44 minutes but Munxar’s keeper Lorjean Xuereb made a very difficult intervention to turn to a corner an effort by Antoine Camilleri and form the same corner action Sannat’s strikers failed to conclude in goal from the melee in front of Munxar’s goalmouth.

Sannat reduced the score with a goal that arrived in the fourth minute of play of the second period when Antoine Camilleri released Mohammed Senussi Telessi inside Munxar’s area and the latter concluded in goal with a low shot.  Sannat kept insisting but Munxar were well deployed and managed to control Sannat’s play.  Sannat however managed to re-open their chances with a second goal that arrived on 70 minutes from a penalty, awarded for a foul by Brian Meilak on substitute Joseph Zammit and Mohammed Senussi Telessi converted from the spot kick.  Three minutes later Sannat had a good opportunity to level the score but a shot by Joseph Zammit was saved to a corner by goalie Lorjean Xuereb.  Sannat suffered a setback in their attempt to recover the deficit on 80 minutes when they ended with ten players on the field as Nicholas Micallef was sent off for a second bookable offence following a foul on substitute Joseph Grima.  Four minutes later Munxar also ended with ten players when skipper Keith Borg was sent for a second caution following a foul on Antoine Camilleri. From the resultant free-kick Sannat’s Josiah Buttigieg had his attempt that was cleared with difficulty to a corner but the score remained unchanged until the final whistle of the referee.

At the end of the match Munxar’s players and their numerous supporters started the celebrations for the success achieved and the festive atmosphere continued when the players and club officials were presented with medals and the trophy of champions by Mr Horace Laudi, the Regional Manager for Bank of Valletta in Gozo, the President of the GFA Dr Samuel Azzopardi and other GFA officials.

MATCH REPORT

St Lawrence Spurs and Zebbug Rovers shared the spoils in a draw of six goals in the last match of the campaign for the two sides so that they managed to end the season with a positive result.  The two sides had their final placing on the table determined in the previous matches as St Lawrence ended the campaign at the third spot on the table while Zebbug finished at the fourth place.  Both St Lawrence and Zebbug expected to be more competitive this season but failed to remain among the challengers for promotion and therefore both sides were aiming to end the campaign with a win.  The final score was ultimately a just result as both teams tried hard to obtain the win.

St Lawrence had a better start and opened the sore in the third minute of play through a shot from an angled position by Radovan Duric.  Zebbug continued to suffer St Lawrence’s play during the opening stages of the encounter and on 11 minutes the Spurs doubled the score through a header by Radovan Duric following a corner kick by Kenny Hili.  Zebbug managed to recover from the difficult start and on 23 minutes a shot from outside the area by Francesco Cini ended just over the crossbar.  On 34 minutes St Lawrence’s goalie Luke Buttigieg was well placed to block a shot from an angled position by Bartomeo Perello Palou. One minute later Zebbug re-opened the issue when a shot from an angled position by Chris Borg was partially saved by goalie Luke Buttigieg and from the rebound the ball arrived to Francesco Cini who had his shot that got a deflection form the defence and the ball ended in goal.  On 37 minutes Zebbug went again close to scoring when Chris Borg entered St Lawrence’s territory but his lob over the goalkeeper ended high.  Zebbug however scored the equaliser on 40 minutes with a lob by Chris Borg over St Lawrence’s keeper who was out of his position.

The match during the second period became more interesting with regard to the final outcome as the two sides tried to take the lead.  On 47 minutes Zebbug were dangerous through a shot by Lucas Farrugia that was deflected to a corner by the defence. Zebbug took the lead on 54 minutes through a strike by Francesco Cini that surprised St Lawrence’s goalie.  One minute alter Zebbug could have added another goal but an attempt by Lucas Farrugia was saved in two attempts by goalie Luke Buttigieg.  St Lawrence’s goalie Luke Buttigieg once again kept his side in contention with two consecutive saves following two shots by Chris Borg on 71 minutes who took the ball from a short clearance by the defence.  St Lawrence replied on 74 minutes with a cross shot by Kenny Hili that was stopped by the crossbar. The Spurs levelled the score on 77 minutes when Radovan Duric unmarked Kenny Hili inside Zebbug’s area and the latter placed easily into an open goal.  During the final minutes the two sides had a scoring opportunity to regain the lead.  On 87 minutes a shot y Zebbug’s George Portelli ended high and two minutes later St Lawrence’s Carlton Mifsud had his shot well saved by Zebbug’s keeper Baskal Saliba so that the score remained unchanged.

Xaghra United ended their commitments in the second division league with a handsome win over bottom-placed Qala saints.  In this last match of the campaign for the two sides the final score did not have any impact on the final standings as Xaghra were already sure of the placing at the second place from the bottom, while Qala were mathematically sure of ending at the last place on the table.  The match turned out into a well contested match where both sides were relieved from any pressure. However, Xaghra dominated the final stages of the encounter so that they ended up obtaining a win by a large margin.

Qala had an excellent start and opened the score after just ten seconds when Modibo Niakate received the ball inside Xaghra’s area in an unmarked position and netted with a low drive with the ball hitting the base of the post before ending in goal.  Xaghra replied two minutes later through a shot by Milorad Janjus that ended high but as time passed by play took place in the midfield as Qala managed to control play and to keep their area clear from danger.  Xaghra however managed to level the score on 28 minutes through Milorad Janus who entered Qala’s territory with a personal action and placed into an open goal after turning around Qala’s keeper who left his position in an attempt to block the danger.  Four minutes later Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb made a difficult save to turn to a corner another attempt by Milorad Janjus and on 34 minutes the same goalkeeper was well placed to neutralise a shot from an angled position by Joseph Mercieca.  Xaghra turned the result in their favour on 40 minutes through a fine strike from outside the area by Milorad Janjus following a personal action.

Qala tried to produce a reaction from the early stages of the second half but they found it difficult to convert their efforts into scoring opportunities.  Xaghra gained more confidence as time passed by and as a result the outcome of the match remained uncertain for most of the second half of the match. On 63 minutes Qala’s Bernard Sammut had a shot from outside the area that ended high and one minute later Xaghra replied through a free kick by Gabriel Farrugia that was well saved by goalie Omar Xuereb.  On 67 minutes Qala’s keeper was called to make an effective intervention to clear the ball from the edge of the area before Adrian Xiberras could conclude in goal following a personal action and the same Xiberras was unlucky one minute later when his good shot was stopped by the crossbar. Xaghra continued to produce more dangerous play and on 76 minutes Savio Galea had a header following a corner by Joseph Mercieca that ended just over Qala’s goal.  On 80 minutes Qala had an opportunity to level the score when they were awarded a penalty for handling by Peter Joe Mifsud but Joseph Attard’s shot from the spot-kick was saved by Xaghra’s goalie Frankie Azzopardi. On 90 minutes Xaghra increased their lead through a low shot by Adrian Xiberras following a personal action form the right flank and in the first minute of stoppage time Milorad Janjus scored the fourth goal for his side with a shot from outside the area that surprised Qala’s keeper.  Xaghra sealed the victory with the fifth goal that arrived in the second minute of stoppage time through Savio Galea who guided the ball in the net from close distance following a corner kick by Joseph Mercieca.

MATCH REPORT

Munxar Falcons earned the three points they needed from their penultimate match of the campaign against St Lawrence Spurs so that they regained sole leadership and they need just one point form the last match of the league against contenders for the main honour and for promotion Sannat Lions.  With this result Sannat will need the victory from their match against Munxar and therefore the last match of the campaign will be a typical cup tie to determine the champions of the category and the promotion. The match between Munxar and St Lawrence turned out into an interesting encounter where Munxar only managed to clinch the full points at stake with two goals that arrived in the last part of the encounter.

Munxar came out more aggressive and in the seventh minute of play they went close to scoring when Jordi Parnis released Micahel Mattias Uzor but the latter had his shot form an angled position that ended just wide.  Two minutes later Munxar opened the score through an excellent strike by Christian Bugeja, following a short clearance by the defence, which surprised goalie Luke Buttigieg.  Munxar tried to maintain pressure on St Lawrence’s rear guard and on 10 minutes goalie Luke Buttigieg made a good intervention to block an effort by Michael Mattias Uzor.  The Spurs replied on 29 minutes through a shot form long distance by Shaun Mizzi that ended inches wide and five minutes later Denis di Maio had an attempt from outside the area that ended just over Munxar’s crossbar.  St Lawrence levelled the score on 39 minutes when Denis Di Maio released Kenny Hili who placed in goal with a low drive as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger.  Munxar tried to regain the lead with an immediate reaction but one minute later a shot from an angled position by Michael Mattias Uzor, when the goalkeeper was out of his position, ended wide.

St Lawrence could have turned the result in their favour on 47 minutes when Charlon Tabone released Denis Di Maio inside Munxar’s area but goalie Lorjean Xuereb had excellent timing and blocked the danger.  Three minutes later the same Di Maio concluded badly when he was alone in the area. Munxar replied on 65 minutes when Jordi Parnis concluded towards foal after avoiding the goalkeeper but defender Daniel Micallef recovered his position and cleared the ball from the goalmouth. Five minutes later a header by Munxar’s Joseph Grima following a corner kick by Jordi Parnis ended high.  Munxar kept insisting and on 72 minutes the same goalkeeper saved with difficulty a direct free kick by Jordi Parnis. St Lawrence’s keeper continued to be the protagonist for his side and on 79 minutes he kept his side in contention for a positive result when he blocked in time an effort by Joseph Grima who was alone in the area. Munxar however took their second lead when a cross by substitute Ryan Meilak was followed by Michael Mattias Uzor who headed in a goal from close distance.  St Lawrence were demoralised and Munxar took full advantage to administer their lead and also sealed the victory with a third goal that arrived on 87 minutes through a low drive from an angled position by Jordi Parnis after receiving from Michael Mattias Uzor.

MATCH REPORT

Zebbug Rovers recovered from a long series of disappointing results and obtained three points from their match against bottom-placed Qala Saints.  Zebbug’s goal matured with the odd goal from three where the three goals were converted during the first half. With this result Qala Saints practically lost every opportunity to end the season away from the bottom place of the category.

Zebbug’s win was deserved as they held more initiative while Qala seemed weak in attack and they rarely arrived in a position to obtain a positive result from this encounter.

Zebbug opened the score in the third minute of play through an own goal committed by Qala’s Michael Mumford headed badly following a corner kick by Bartomeu Perello Palou and the ball ended behind his goalkeeper.  Zebbug kept insisting during the opening minutes and on 5 minutes a shot from outside the area by Francesco Cini ended just wide.  Qala tried to regain some confidence and as time passed by they created a reaction to their difficult start. Qala levelled the score 24 minutes when Michael Mumford made up for his mistake during the opening stages of the match by concluding a personal action with a fine shot that ended out of the reach of Zebbug’s keeper.  Two minutes later Qala’s Modibo Niakate had a shot after receiving from Michael Mumford that was deflected by the defence to a corner and on 39 minutes Zebbug replied with a free kick by Bartomeu Perello Palou that was saved with difficulty to a corner by goalie Omar Xuereb.  One minute later the same goalkeeper made another difficult intervention to block a shot by Francesco Cini and on 41 Zebbug regained the lead when Patrick Camilleri crossed inside the area following a corner kick by Christian Vella and the ball arrived to an unmarked Chris Borg who placed the ball easily in goal from close distance.  Qala went very close to level the score one minute later but a free kick form long distance by Malcolm Cefai was saved to a corner by goalie Baskal Saliba.

For the second period Zebbug continued to produce a dangerous play and on 49 minutes Qala‘s keeper Omar Xuereb partially saved an effort by Chris Borg and defender Gabriel Sillato cleared the ball off the fatal line.  The same goalkeeper made another important intervention one minute later following an attempt by Christian Vella and on 62 minute Qala could have levelled the score but a shot cross by Modibo Niakate passed in front of Zebbug’s goal without finding any striker for the tap-in.  On 67 minutes Zebbug were again dangerous through a shot by Chris Borg that was neutralised by goalie Omar Xuereb and 72 minutes Zebbug’s Marco Ciangura had an attempt directly from a free kick but the ball ended high. Zebbug had a goal scored by Chris Borg on 77 for an offside infringement and one minute alter Qala’s keeper saved with difficulty a direct free kick by Bartomeu Perello Palou.  Zebbug went close to make sure of the victory with the third goal on 82 minutes but a shot by Bartomeu Perello Palou was partially saved by goalie Omar Xuereb and substitute Martin Buttigieg cleared the ball from the goalmouth to avoid a certain goal. Zebbug were almost punished for the missed chances as Qala went close to level the score in the third minute of stoppage time but a direct free kick by Michael Mumford ended just over the crossbar.

Munxar Falcons obtained three easy points from a large win over Zebbug Rovers so that they retained their one-point lead over their contenders for promotion Sannat Lions.  Munxar paved the way to the victory with four goals scored during the first period and sealed the result with two other goals scored during the final stages of the encounter.  With this result Zebbug compromised their possibility to challenge for the third spot on the table in the final stages of the campaign.

Zebbug created the first scoring opportunity of the encounter in the fifth minute of play through a free kick by Francesco Cini that was saved with difficulty by goalie Lorjean Xuereb.  Zebbug practically compromised their possibility to be stronger challengers to the leaders of the category on 15 minutes when they were reduced to ten players as Matthion Formosa was sent off for stopping Michael Matthias Uzor from entering the area.  From the resultant free kick taken by Oliver Curmi, Zebbug’s goalie Baskal Saliba partially saved on the fatal line and form the rebound Mario Azzopardi arrived in time to place the ball into an open goal.  On 22 minutes Munxar went close to scoring but a shot by Samuel Muscat from the edge of the area hit the crossbar.  In another good action by Junxar few minute later an effort by Jordi Parnis ended just wide. After the resumption Munxar retained command of play but reduced their pressure on Zebbug’s defensive department.  Munxar could have scored another goal on 65 minutes but a strike by Christian Bugeja hit the crossbar. Munxar however scored their fifth goal on 68 minutes when Zebbug’s goalie tried to block the danger following an initiative by Jordi Parnis but Michael Mattias Uzor toom the ball and placed easily in goal.  On 84 minutes Munxar added another goal, scored by Jordi Parnis following a cross by Christian Bugeja.  Four minutes later Munxar’s keeper Liam Gatt made three consecutive intervention to block two consecutive shots by Chris Borg and an attempt by Owen Mercieca and denied Zebbug from scoring their second goal.

MATCH REPORT

St Lawrence Spurs scored two goals during the first half and earned the full points at stake from their match against Xaghra United.  With the points obtained the Spurs consolidated their third spot on the table. The Spurs deserved the win as they produced the better play during the first period and managed to resist to Xaghra’s reaction after the break who could have reopened the issue on more than one occasion.

The first scoring opportunity of the match was created by Xaghra in the second minute of play through a low shot by Milorad Janjus that ended just wide.  The Spurs replied on 14 minutes and opened the score when a cross by Luke Attard arrived to Kenny Hili who concluded in goal with a first timer.  St Lawrence doubled the score three minutes later when Radovan Duric produced a good move inside Xaghra’s area and his pass arrived to an unmarked Jason Theuma who guided the ball into an open goal from close distance.  On 29 minutes the Spurs could have scored another goal but a low shot by Radovan Duric was saved to a corner by goalie Frankie Azzopardi.  From the resultant corner action, taken by the same Duric, Shaun Mizzi was unlucky when his attempt was stopped by the post. Xaghra replied on 32 minutes with a fine shot by Luke Attard that was saved to a corner by goalie Luke Buttigieg and the same goalkeeper was at the right place on 36 mints to save with difficulty a shot from an angled position by Milorad Janjus.  The Spurs however regained command of play during the final stages of the first half. MATCH REPORT

Sannat Lions as expected registered their fourth win over Qala Saints in the campaign and with the points obtained they remain close to the current leaders Munxar Falcons.  Sannat’s win arrived with the least possible efforts as they scored the three goals during the first half and controlled play with authority after the break.

Sannat took command of play from the early stages of the encounter and opened the score on 14 minutes through a strike form outside the area by Daniel Borg where the ball got a deflection by the defence and ended in goal.  Qala continued to suffer Sannat’s play and on 20 minutes a shot form long distance by Josiah Buttigieg ended high.  Three minutes later Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb left his position in time to clear the ball before Oliver Farrugia could conclude towards goal and the same goalkeeper was well placed on 24 minutes to block a shot from close distance by Mohammed Senussi Telessi.  Sannat doubled the score on 31 minutes when Nicholas Micallef passed to Oliver Farrugia who entered Qala’s territory, avoided the attempt of goalie Omar Xuereb to block the danger outside the area and concluded easily into an open goal.  On 39 minutes the same Oliver Farrugia was unlucky when he had a header from a corner kick by Nicholas Micallef that hit the crossbar. On 42 minutes Sannat Lions scored their third goal with a header by Joseph Zammit following a cross from the left flank by Oliver Farrugia.

Sannat continued to dictate matter after the break but reduced their pressure on Qala’s defence.  They could have added another goal on 61 minutes but a shot from outside the area by substitute Eric Gauci ended wide.  Qala could have scored a consolation goal on 79 minutes through a shot from outside the area by Malcolm Cefai that was well saved by goalie Leonard Camilleri.  Sannat went again close to scoring on other occasions before the end of the encounter. On 81 minutes a shot by substitute Isaac Mampalao following a personal action ended ide and minutes later two minutes later Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb blocked the ball before Eric Gauci could conclude from close distance.  Sannat’s last scoring opportunity arrived on 83 minutes through a shot by Oliver Farrugia that ended wide.
