MATCH REPORT

St Lawrence Spurs obtained three precious points from the match against Qala Saints so that they managed to recover from the defeat conceded in their previous match.  This was a match between two teams who conceded a defeat in their opening match of the campaign and therefore they both needed a positive result to earn the first points.  The match was well contested but the Spurs managed to prevail through a brace by Chris Borg that arrived with a goal scored in each half. Qala tried hard to at least obtain a point from this encounter but they were erratic in their finishing and failed to capitalize form their best scoring opportunities.

The two teams had an offensive approach and in the fourth minute of play Qala created the first serious scoring opportunity through a free kick by Botshelo Gibson Mfuluane that ended just wide.  The Spurs replied on 6 minutes when Charlon Farrugia entered Qala’s territory but had his close ranged shot by goalie Franco Buttigieg. St Lawrence opened the score on 12 minutes when Qala’s rearguard failed to clear the ball from the area, the ball arrived to Charlon Farrugia who had his attempt that was partially saved by the goalkeeper but Chris Borg took the rebound and placed in goal with a low drive.  Qala replied through an attempt by Oliver Farrugia that was blocked by the defense to a corner and on 18 minutes a shot by Robert Grima following a free kick by Michael Mumford ended just over St Lawrence’s goal.  On 30 minutes St Lawrence’s Charlon Farrugia operated a personal action but his shot was well saved by goalie Franco Buttigieg. Qala went again close to level the score on 41 minutes but a shot from a good position by Michael Mumford missed the target.

Qala went again close to score the equalizer on 54 minute but a shot by Oliver Farrugia was neutralised by goalie Angelo Brignoli.  The Spurs doubled the score on 57 minutes when Chris Borg was released inside Qala’s area and the striker netted with a low shot.  Qala were not demoralised and on then hour mark they reduced the deficit through a tap-in by Botshelo Gibson Mfuluane following a cross from the left flank by Oliver Farrugia.  Qala kept insisting but they found oit extremely dangerous to convert their play into scoring opportunities.  On 83 minutes Qala’s substitute Frank Attard released Botshelo Gibson Mfuluane inside St Lawrence’s area but the latter concluded high from an ideal position.    On 87 minutes the Spurs could have made sure of the win but a low shot by Chris Borg following a counter break was well saved by goalie Franco Buttigieg. Qala were again dangerous one minute later through a ,ow shot by Botshelo Gibson Mfuluane following a personal action that ended just wide.  On the stroke of regular time the Spurs were reduced to ten players when substitute Stefan Sultana was sent off for a second bookable offence. From the resultant free kick taken by Botshelo Gibson Mfuluane the ball ended just over the crossbar.
