In the match between the two teams occupying the last two places on the table Munxar Falcons registered a 4-1 win over Qala Saints and with the points obtained, the Falcons reduced their gap from the same Qala to just one point and therefore remain in contention to move away from the bottom of the table.  This was also the last match of the second round of the campaign and with this result there are three teams in the last three places on the table within a range of two points.  Munxar’s win matured with goals scored during the first half so that for the result of the encounter Munxar defended well Qala’s reaction that was produced during the second period.

Munxar opened the score in the fourth minute of play when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul by goalkeeper Franco Buttigieg on Jordi Parnis and Michael Mattias Uzor converted from the spot kick.  Qala seemed shocked and on 10 minutes Munxar doubled the score when Jordi Parnis entered Qala’s area and netted with a low drive.  Munxar continued to be the better side on the field and on 28 minutes they added another goal when Qala’s goalie Franco Buttigieg failed to clear the ball away from the area and Carlton Mifsud took the ball and fired in goal from an angled position.  Munxar practically put their mind at rest form the victory with the fourth goal that arrived on 40 minutes when goalie Franco Buttigieg partially saved a strike by Michael Mattias Uzor and form the rebound Oliver Curmi placed in goal with a low shot.

Qala’s reaction after the break was sterile during the opening minutes of the second half but as time passed by their action on Munxar’s goal became more frequent.  On 65 minutes a free kick by Brian Meilak ended away from Munxar’s goal and pone minutes later a close ranged shot by Steve Dimech following a pass inside the area by Dario Zamora was saved with difficulty to a corner by goalie Lorjean Xuereb.  Qala scored what had to be the consolation goal on 68 minutes when Steve Dimech won a ball at the edge of Munxar’s area but had his first strike saved with difficulty by goalie Lorjean Xuereb and from the rebound the same striker had his shot blocked by the defence.  The ball arrived to Christoph Caruana who fired into an open goal.  Qala tried to reduce the deficit further but on 83 minutes a cross by Dario Zamora addressed to an unmarked Christoph Caruana was cleared in time from the goalmouth with the goalkeeper beaten and one minute later a goal by Steve Dimech was disallowed for handling.  Qala’s last scoring opportunity of the match arrived through a shot by Samuel Sillato that ended high.

Referee: Adrian Caruana
