Ghajnsielem retained their chances to defend their title and kept in touch with the teams at the top positions with a convincing 4-0 win over Oratory Youths. Ghajnsielem dominated this encounter and the victory could have been with a larger margin if it was not for some over confidence shown by the strikers. This was the first match for John Cassar as the new coach of Ghajnsielem. The Blacks surprisingly had a prudent approach as they protected their area and operated with counter breaks. Ghajnsielem’s offensive play however was more dangerous than that of their opponents and the reigning champions paved the way to the victory with two goals scored in each half. For this match Ghajnsielem had John Jairo Sandoval Guarin missing due to a suspension while Oratory had Javier Polo Longarela missing from their usual defensive deployment for the same reason.
The Blacks could have opened the score on 15 minutes when Renan Telles entered Oratory’s area with a personal action but his low drive was stopped by the base of the post and from the rebound the goalkeeper saved the danger. Four minutes later oratory’s goalie Leonard Camilleri saved to a corner a corner kick by Edison Bilboa Zarate. On 24 minutes a shot from an angled position by Ghajnsielem’s Emiliano Lattes hit the crossbar and three minutes later Stefan Cassar entered Oratory’s area with a personal action form the left flank but form his low cross Emiliano Lattes and John Camilleri both failed to connect. Ghajnsielem’s Emiliano Lattes had another attempt on 31 minutes that was blocked by goalie Leonard Camilleri and one minute later the Blacks opened the score through a tap-in by John Camilleri following a low cross by Chris Camilleri. Oratory replied on 35 minutes through a lob by Borja Polo Longarela that ended wide and on 40 minutes Ghajnsielem’s Kenneth Mercieca had a header form a corner kick by Edison Bilboa Zarate that ended just high. One minute later Ghajnsielem doubled the score when a shot on the run by Renan Telles was partially saved by goalie Leonard Camilleri and from the rebound the same striker guided the ball into an open goal. Ghajnsielem kept insisting and could have score more goals before half time. On 43 minutes a shot by Edison Bilboa Zarate was partially saved by goalie Leonard Camilleri and the defence cleared the danger. One minute later Ghajnsielem’s John Camilleri incredibly concluded on the crossbar with an open goal at his mercy following a cross by Emiliano Lattes.
After the break Ghajnsielem started to control play but they remained more dangerous than their opponents. On 59 minutes Oratory’s keeper left his position in time to clear the ball from his territory before Renan Telles could conclude towards an open goal. Five minutes later Oratory’s Borja Polo Longarela had a shot that ended high and on 71 minutes Ghajnsielem increased their lead through a low shot by Renan Telles following a counter break by John Camilleri. On 80 minutes Ghajnsielem were again dangerous but an effort by Renan Telles following an action by Stefan Cassar was saved by goalie Leonard Camilleri with the aid of the post and on 86 minutes Oratory could have scored a consolation goal but an attempt by Borja Polo Longarela following a personal action ended just wide. Three minutes later Oratory’s substitute Joseph Bonnici had a header from a free kick by Bartomeu Perello Palou that was well saved by goalie Luke Buttigieg. Ghajnsielem sealed the victory with the fourth goal that arrived in the first minute of stoppage time through a shot from close distance by Chris Camilleri following a cross by John Camilleri.
