SK Victoria Wanderers and Victoria Hotspurs earned a point each from a goalless draw in the first match of the third round for the two sides. This result did not satisfy either side as the Hotspurs lost an opportunity to reduce their gap from the fourth place on the table while the Wanderers failed to win the necessary points to move away from the second place from the bottom. In this match the Hotspurs saw more of the ball and held territorial supremacy for long stretches but failed to capitalise from the best scoring opportunities that they created. The Wanderers on the other hand defended well and for most of the time and managed to keep a clean sheet until the final whistle. For most of the time the match was quite tough and the referee had to show twelve yellow cards and three players were sent off during the final stages of the encounter.
The Hotspurs took command of play from the early stages of the encounter and in the eighth minute of play they also protested for a penalty when Jonathan Bajada ended on the floor in the area following a challenge with his direct opponent. On 9 minutes the Wanderers replied with a lob by Milanko Raskovic that was neutralised by goalie Adrian Parnis and two minutes later the Hotspurs had an attempt by Jonathan Bajada following a cross from the left flank that was well saved by goalie Matthew Towns. On 13 minutes the Hotspurs were again dangerous from a direct free kick by Henrique Maciel that was also saved by goalie Matthew Towns and on 18 minutes a shot by Denis Sytnik as block by the Wanderers’ keeper Matthew Towns. On 22 minutes the Hotspurs had an attempt through Jonathan Bajada that ended high and on 35 minutes a curling shot by Denis Sytnik ended inches wide from the Wanderers’ goal. The Wanderers continued to suffer pressure from their opponents and their goalkeeper was again called to make a good save on 43 minutes to neutralise a free kick by Henrique Maciel.
In the first minute of play of the second period the Hotspurs protested again for a penalty when Joseph Vella ended on the floor in the area following a personal action and the Wanderers replied with a shot by Chris Sciortino that was weak and goalie Adrian Parnis saved without difficulty. On 62 minutes the Wanderers had their best scoring opportunity of the encounter but Igor Grkajac’s header following a cross by Milanko Raskovic was blocked by goalie Adrian Parnis. The Wanderers ended with ten players when Sam Frank Bajada was sent off for a second bookable offence. On 77 minutes the Wanderers managed to avoid a dangerous action in their area but Predrag Djordjevic block a good attempt by substitute Eric Nwankwo. The Hotspurs were also reduced to ten players on 82 minutes when Christian Mercieca was sent off for retaliation on Mario Azzopardi and on 87 minutes the Hotspurs created a good action through a personal initiative by Kevin Farrugia but goalie Matthew Towns saved to a corner. From the same corner action taken by Jason Pace substitute Mark Camilleri had a half volley that was saved by keeper Matthew Towns. In the third minute of stoppage time the Hotspurs had their last opportunity to clinch the victory but Mark Camilleri’s header following a cross by substitute Frankie Camilleri, who was making a return after a long suspension, was deflected by a defender and the action ended in a corner. The Hotspurs ended the match with nine players as Kevin Farrugia was sent off in the fourth minute of stoppage time for an intervention on Milanko Raskovic during a counter break.
