Xaghra defeat Zebbug with a goal scored in each half

Xaghra United scored a goal in each half in the match against Zebbug Rovers and moved further away from the bottom place on the table.  This was the first match from the last round of the campaign for the two sides and both teams were aiming to obtain a victory to improve their current placing on the table.  Zebbug were coming from two consecutive wins and were aiming to challenge for the third spot on the table while Xaghra have been struggling for a long time to avoid the last place on the standings.

Zebbug could have opened the score in the second minute of play but a back-heel by Bartomeo Perello palou towards an open goal was cleared off the goalmouth by the defence.  Three minutes later Xaghra replied with a header by Milorad Janjus that was saved by goalie Baskal Saliba and on 7 minutes the same Janjus had another effort that was well saved by Zebbug’s keeper.  Xaghra increased their pressure on Zebbug’s defence and on 15 minutes a shot by Clayton Hili was neutralised by goalie Baskal Saliba.  In another occasion by Xaghra that arrived three minutes later a header by Silvan Bonello ended wide and Zebbug replied on 21 minutes through a shot by Josef Debrincat that was stopped by the crossbar.  One minute later Xaghra’s Clayton Hili entered Zebbug’s area and placed in goal with a low shot but the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement and on 34 minutes Zebbug’s Christian Vella concluded wide from an ideal position.  Three minutes later Xaghra’s keeper was well placed to block an effort by Bartomeo Perello Palou and on 40 minutes Xaghra opened the score through a curling shot by Milorad Janjus from the edge of the area that ended out of the reach of the goalkeeper.  On 43 minutes Zebbug could have levelled the sore but a shot by Bartomeo Perello Palou was well saved by goalie Frankie Azzopardi and on the stroke of half time Zebbug’s keeper made a good save following a low shot by Adrian Xiberras.

Zebbug went very close to score the equaliser in the second minute of play of the second period but a strike by Bartomeo Perello Palou hit the post.  Zebbug were again unlucky on 55 minutes when a free kick by Bartomeo Perello Palou was stopped byt he crossbar and one minute later Zebbug’s keeper kept his die in contention with a fine save following an attempt by Adrian Xiberras.  On 66 minutes Xaghra’s Johann Bajada had a good shot that ended wide and four minutes later Xaghra sealed the victory with the second goal that arrived through a low drive by Adrian Xiberras fllowing a coutner break by Johann Bajada.  Zebbug’s best opportunity to re-open the issue arrived on 79 minutes but a free kick by Bartomeo Perello Palou ended high.  On 87 minutes Xaghra went close to score the thirds goal but goalie Baskal Saliba left his position in time to block an effort by Johann Bajada who was alone in the area.
