MATCH REPORT

Xaghra United produced their best performance so far this season as they lived up to their expectations by obtaining a comfortable 6-1 win over Qala Saints.  With this result Xaghra moved to the top of the table while Qala suffered a setback in their ambitions to be among the challengers for promotion. Xaghjra were the better side throughout the match and earned the win with hat-tricks scored by Samson Remi Gabriel and Johnny Camilleri.

Xaghra could have opened the score on 10 minutes but a shot from outside the area by Samson Remi Gabriel was well saved by goalie Omar Xuereb.  However, Samson Remi Gabriel opened the score on 13 minutes through a header form a corner kick by Joseph George Vella.  Xaghra kept insisting and on 25 minutes they doubled the score when Johnny Camilleri header from close distance another corner kick by Joseph George Vella.  Three minutes later Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb was called to make a difficult save to block a header by Samson Remi Gabriele following a cross by Joseph George Vella and Qala replied on 32 minutes through a header by Michael Mumford that was cleared off the line by defender Jonathan Xiberras.  Xaghra went very close to add another goal on 36 minutes but Samson Remi Gbriele concluded badly when he was unmarked by Johnny Camilleri and three minutes later Qala were awarded a penalty for handling by defender Sam Frank Bajada and Fatos Zeqiri converted from the spot kick to give some hope of recovery to his side.

However, Xaghra regained command of play from the early stages of the second period and on 47 minutes the Blues added another goal through a header by Samson Remi Gabriele following a cross by Johnny Camilleri.  Qala replied one minute later but an attempt by Michael Mumford was neutralised by goalie Owen Attard but on 52 minutes Xaghra scored their fourth goal when Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb partially saved a strike by Steve Sultana and Johnny Camilleri netted form the rebound.  Two minutes later a strike by Qala’s Samuel Sillato was turned to a corner with some difficulty by Xaghra’s keeper Owen Attard and on the hour mark Xaghra’s Johnny Camilleri marked his personal hat-trick with another goal when he converted directly from a free kick.  Minutes later Xaghra’s Samson Remi Gabriel lifted over the crossbar form an ideal position but on 73 minutes Samson Remi Gabriele made the score 6-1 for Xaghra when he concluded in goal a personal action.  Qala’s best opportunity to score their second goal arrived on 88 minutes but substitute Darren Chima Njoku headed wide a corner kick by Michael Mumford.

Referee: Mario Apap
