MATCH REPORT

Munxar Falcons registered a win after a long period in their match against Gharb Rangers and with the points obtained they reached the same Gharb on the table with a four point lead over the team at the bottom place on the table.  This was a direct clash between two teams who are aiming to move away from the relegation zone at an early stage of the encounter. The match also lived up to the expectation and the final score remained uncertain until the final whistle as both Munxar and Gharb tried hard to achieve their objective.  The two sides enjoyed moments of superiority over their opponents and Muxnar’s win matured as they managed to capitalise better from their scoring opportunities. For this match Gharb had Christian Attard and Anthony Sultana missing due to a suspension.

Munxar had a better start and during the opening stages they held control of play in the midfield.  On 15 minutes Munxar’s Borja Polo Longarela had an attempt form a free kick that was blocked by the defence but from the following action Gharb’s defence cleared the ball from the area with some difficulty.  On 27 minutes Munxar were again dangerous through a header by Diego Martins Da Silva was well saved by goalie Daniel Spiteri. Gharb replied on 28 minutes through a strike by Nemanja Stojanovic that was well saved by goalie John Paul Cassar and one minute later Gharb’s Junior Elisio Batista Da Conceicao hit badly from a good position so that goalie Daniel Spiteri saved without difficulty.  Munxar replied on 34 minutes with a shot by Diego Martins Da Silva that hit the post and Gharb were also dangerous four minutes later with a good shot by Hugo Santa Rosa Cruz form an angled position that was saved to a corner by goalie John Paul Cassar. Munxar opened the score on 39 minutes through a low shot by Adebayo Ademilua that ended out of the reach of Gharb’s goalie.  Gharb tried to produce an immediate reaction and on 41 minutes a shot by Hugo Santa Rosa Cruz took a deflection from the defence and the ball ended in a corner.  From the same corner kick by Santa Rosa Cruz, an attempt by Batista Da Conceicao was cleared from the goalmouth by Munxar’s Christian Debono.

Play became much more exciting after the break as the two sides increased their efforts to achieve their respective ambition.  On 49 minutes Gharb’s keeper Daniel Spiteri blocked a shot-cross by Borja Polo Longarela and from the same action the goalkeeper blocked a low shot by Munxar’s Christian Debono.  One minute later Gharb operated a good counter break but Hugo Santa Rosa Cruz concluded badly form a good position. On 52 minutes Munxar’s Samwel Muscat had a good shot that missed the target and on 56 minutes Gharb’s Batista Da Conceicao had a shot from a good position that ended wide.   On 61 minutes Gharb failed to capitalise from a potential scoring opportunity that was created following some hesitation by Munxar’s defence to clear the ball from the area but at the end Joel Xuereb’s shot from close distance ended away from goal. Gharb however levelled the score on 20 minutes through a header by Junior Elisio Batista Da Conceicao following a cross by Joel Xuereb.  Gharb kept insisting and on 69 minutes they could have turned the result in their favour but Munxar’s keeper John Paul Cassar was well placed to save in two attempts a strike by Nemanja Stojanovic from outside the area.  Munxar scored the goa, that decided the issue on 65 minutes when Gharb’s keeper Daniel Spiteri partially saved a free kick form long distance by Adebayo Ademilua and from the rebound Diego Martins De Souza pushed the ball in goal from close distance.  Gharb tried hard to save the result in the remaining minutes of the encounter.  On 77 minutes a free kick by Hugo Santa Rosa Cruz ended high and on 84 minutes Batista da Conceicao produced a personal action and the ball ended to an unmarked Daniel Azzopardi, who came in as a substitute during the second period, but the latter saw his shot from close distance that ended over the crossbar.
