MATCH REPORT

Xaghra United registered their third win in the campaign over Qala Saints with two goals scored in each half and with the points obtained they retained their strong position to challenge the current leaders on the table for promotion.  Xaghra paved the way to the win with two goals scored during the opening stages of the encounter and continued to express superiority throughout the encounter so that they made sure of the win with two more goals scored after the break.  In this match Qala rarely created serious danger to Xaghra’s rear guard as they were forced to defend their territory for most of the time of the encounter.

Xaghra took command of play from the very beginning and opened the score on 8 minutes through a shot from long distance by Gabriel Farrugia that ended out of the reach of Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb.  On 11 minutes Xaghra doubled the score when a shot by Kenny Hili following a cross by Matthias Michael Uzor was blocked by the defence and the ball arrived to an unmarked Johann Bajada who fired in goal from inside the area.  The same Johann Bajada had a good shot on 36 minutes that ended just high.  Qala’s best opportunity to reduce the score arrived on 40 minutes through a shot by Joseph Buttigieg following a corner action that ended high.

After the break Xaghra continued to produce more offensive play and increased their lead on 51 minutes through a low shot by Johnny Camilleri following a pass by Matthias Michael Uzor.  The same Camilleri went close to scoring on the hour mark but his attempt was well saved by Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb and on 67 minutes Xaghra’s Johnny Camilleri had a shot from close distance following a cross by Kenny Hili that was once again blocked with some difficulty by goalie Omar Xuereb.  On 68 minutes Xaghra scored their fourth goal through a low drive by Kenny Hili who concluded in goal after receiving an inviting pass inside the area.  Qala’s best opportunity to score a consolation goal on 75 minutes but a lob by substitute Bernard Sammut was well saved by Xaghra’s keeper Owen Attard

Referee: Luke Xuereb
