MATCH REPORT

In the first match from the fourth and final round of the BOV Gozo Football League Division II campaign Oratory Youths scored a goal in each half in their match against Qala Saints and earned three points which put them in the third spot on the table.  Oratory held territorial supremacy for the first hour of play and opened a deserved lead. However, the Maroons produced a determined reaction during the last quarter of the encounter and went close to re-open the issue on more than one occasion, but the strikers were often erratic so that Oratory managed to defend their lead until the end of the encounter.

Oratory came out in better shape and took command of play form the early stages of the match.  The Youths also opened the score on 9 minutes when Anthony Zammit released Daniele Degennaro who netted with a low drive as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger.  Qala continued to suffer Oratory’s play but the latter failed to convert their supremacy into good scoring opportunities so that Qala’s keeper was not called to make any difficult interventions.

After the break, the Youths continued to hold command of play and doubled the score on 51 minutes when Daniele Degennaro passed through Qala’s defence with a personal action and from his pass Anthony Zammit concluded in goal from close distance.  As times passed by Qala came out of their defence and started to become more offensive than their opponents.  On 63 minutes the Saints were also unlucky when free kick by Christian Dingli was stopped by Oratory’s crossbar.  Qala went again close to reduce the score on 26 minutes when a fine header by Joseph Buttigieg from a corner action was saved with difficulty by Oratory’s goalie Richard Sammut with the aid of the crossbar and on 77 minutes Qala’s Christian Dingli entered oratory’s area but concluded wide when he was face to face with Oratory’s keeper.  The Youths could have sealed the win with a third goal on 90 minutes but a free kick by Emanuel Buttigieg was saved with difficulty by Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb.

Referee: Emanuel Grech
