MATCH REPORT

Xaghra United extended their good moment of form since they joined Sannat at the top of the table and earned another three points from a 3-1 win over Zebbug Rovers. Xaghra had a difficult start but managed to produce an immediate reaction so that they turned the result in their favour with two goals scored in the space of seven minutes.

Duringt he opening minutes Xaghra tried to put pressure on Zebbug’s defence but on 13 minutes the Rovers surprised their more quoted opponents when Lucas Farrugia won a ball in the midfield, entered Xaghra’s territory and released Elijah Xuereb who netted with a low drive. Xaghra however levelled the sore on 17 minutes through a header by Johnny Camilleri following a corner kick by Joseph George Vella. Zebbug replied on 24 minutes through an effort by Marcos Peres Vega but Xaghra’s keeper managed to save the danger in two attempts and two minutes later Xaghra took the lead when Johnny Camilleri took a short clearance by Zebbug’s defence and placed easily in goal from close distance. Xaghra kept insisting and on 35 minutes they were dangerous through a shot by Matthias Michael Uzor after receiving form Kenny Hili but the ball ended high. On 41 minutes Xaghra could had scored another goal but a header by Jonathan Xiberras following a cross by Joseph George Vella ended wide.

Zebbug tried to produce a reaction from the early stages of the second period but Xaghra were well organised at their defence and goalie Owen Attard was not called to make difficult interventions. Xaghra on the other hand were more dangerous in their breaks towards Zebbug’s goal and on 69 minutes they were dangerous through a header by Matthias Michael Uzor following a free kick by Joseph George Vella that ended just wide. Three minutes later Xaghra were also unlucky when a shot by Johnny Camilleri following a personal action was stopped by the crossbar and Zebbug’s best opportunity tpo level the score arrived on 75 minutes but a free kick by Marcos Peres Vega ended just over Xaghra’s goal. Three minutes later Xaghra’s Johnny Camilleri passed through Zebbug’s defence with a personal action but his final attempt from close distance was well blocked to a corer by goalie Baskal Saliba. Xaghra made sure of the three points with the third goal that arrived on 79 minutes through a fine shot by Johnny following a corner kick by Joseph George Vella. Zebbug could have scored a second goal in the second minute of stoppage time but a free kick by Elijah Xuereb ended high.
