Nadur Youngsters maintained their last hopes that they could still challenge for the title, in the case that Victoria Hotspurs fail to win at least a point from the match against Xewkija Tigers, with three points obtained from a 6-0 win over Kercem Ajax. However, at the end of Match-Day 20 the Hotspurs became mathematically champions as the Citizens regained a six point lead over the same Nadur prior to the last match of the championship. In this math against Kercem, Nadur held command of play throughout the encounter and scored three goals in each half. Nadur’s striker Marcelo Barbosa registered a personal hat-trick and continued to be serious contender for the honour of top scorer of the championship.
For this match Kercem had Andre Azzopardi and Christoph Caruana missing due to suspension, while Nadur had Daniel Mateo Bustos missing from the player’s list for the same reason. Nadur went very close to open the score in the third minute of play but Marcelo Barbosa hit badly from close distance and the ball ended wide. However, Nadur scored their first goal of the match on 5 minutes through a low shot by Jefferson De Assis, who was in an unmarked position following a low cross by Shaun Attard, among some protests from Kercem’s players alleging an offside position by Nadur’s scorer. On 8 minutes Nadur’s Leiner Garcia Panesso produced a good cross inside Kercem’s area, Marcelo Barbosa addressed towards goal with a back-heel and Jefferson De Assis concluded in goal but the referee disallowed the action for an offside infringement. Nadur kept insisting and on 11 minutes a good shot by Marcelo Barbosa was well saved by goalie Branko Vrndic and on 15 minutes Nadur doubled the score when Kercem’s defender Daniel Sakic committed an own goal in an attempt to clear the ball from the goal mouth following a cross by Marcelo Barbosa. Minutes later a curling shot by Marcelo Barbosa ended wide and Kercem replied on 22 minutes through a shot by Jean Paul Mizzi form outside the area that ended wide. On 26 minutes Nadur scored the third goal that arrived also through an own goal, this time committed by Thomas Vella following a low cross form the left by Marcelo Barbosa. On 37 minutes Nadur’s keeper Franklin Vella was well placed to turn to a corner a direct corner kick by Nathaniel Mercieca and on 44 minutes Nadur were again dangerous through a shot by Marcelo Barbosa that was well saved by goalie Branko Vrndic.
After the break Nadur continued to dominate play and on 47 minutes Marcelo Barbosa came face to face with Kercem’s keeper and the latter blocked the danger and defender Daniel Sakic cleared the danger. On 50 minutes Nadur’s Marcelo Barbosa entered Kercem’s area with a personal action but his shot ended away from goal. Kercem replied on 53 minutes through a free kick by Thomas Vella that missed the target and on 57 minutes Nadur’s keeper Franklin Vella saved with difficulty to a corner a free kick by Felipe Augisto De Oliviera. From the same corner kick by Nathaniel Mercieca, Kercem’s players protested for a penalty alleging handling by Nadur’s defence in an attempt to clear the danger. On 61 minutes Nadur were awarded a penalty for a foul by Jean Paul Mizzi on Marcelo Barbosa. Nadur’s striker had his shot form the spot kick that was partially saved by goalie Branko Vrndic but form the rebound Marcelo Barbosa took the ball and placed easily in goal. One minute later a free kick by Nadur’s Shaun Attard ended high and on 63 minutes Nadur’s Marcelo Barbosa passed through Kercem’s defence with a personal action but his low drive aimed towards the far post ended just wide. Nadur were again dangerous on 64 minutes when Leiner Garcia Panesso passed towards Lucas Bareto Da Silva who had his shot on the run that as stopped by the crossbar. Nadur scored their fifth goal on 65 minutes when Shaun Attard unmarked Marcelo Barbosa who netted as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger. Marcelo Barbosa made it 6-0 on 81 minutes when he received a ball inside Kercem’s area, turned around his direct opponent and concluded in goal with a curling shot. Nadur kept insisting and on 83 they could have added another goal but an effort by Jefferson De Assis was saved with difficulty to a corner by goalie Branko Vrndic. Kercem, on the other hand, were dangerous on 41 minutes but a shot by Thomas Vella from a good position ended away from goal. Kercem’s goalie Branko Vrnidic denied Nadur from scoring another goal with another good intervention on 88 minutes following a shot by Marcelo Barbosa following a personal action. Kercem could have scored a consolation goal on 90 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for handling by substitute Nicholas Inguanez but the shot by Kercem’s goalie Branko Vrndic, who was playing his last match for Kercem and was therefore aiming to leave the team with a goal, had his shot form the spot kick that was saved by goalie Franklin Vella.
