SUMMARY

St Lawrence Spurs registered their second consecutive win in the campaign in their match against Zebbug Rovers.  The match between St Lawrence and Zebbug was the first one from Match-Day 4 and the two sides were aiming for the win as they were both on three points prior to this encounter.  Play during the first half was rather balanced and Zebbug managed to take the break with a one-goal lead. However, the Spurs produced a determined reaction throughout the second period and their efforts were rewarded with two goals scored in the space of two minutes during the final stages of the encounter.  With this result the Spurs regained hopes that they may join the teams at the top of the table, while Zebbuig suffered a setback in their ambitions as they conceded the third consecutive defeat in the campaign and remain at the second place from the bottom on the table.

TIMELINE

Play was rather balanced during the first period as the two sides tried to be offensive in their play.

6’ a shot by St Lawrence’s Adrian Xiberras ended just over Zebbug’s goal.

9’ Zebbug’s keeper was called to make a difficult intervention to block a good free kick by Charlon Farrugia.

15’ The Rovers replied with a free kick ta’ Emmanuel Galea that was saved to a corner with some difficulty by St Lawrence’s keeper Angelo Brignoli

15’ (1-0) Zebbug opened the score from the same corner action, taken by Tiago Barbosa, as the clearance by St Lawrence’s defence arrived to Matthion Formosa who netted with a low shot.

21’ (1-1) penalty – St Lawrence had an immediate reaction and levelled the score from a penalty, awarded for handling by Emmanuel Galea and converted by Matthias Michael Uzor.

25’ The Spurs kept the momentum and could have scored a second goal but a first-timer by Daniel Micallef following a corner kick by Charlon Farrugia ended just wide.

32’ (2-1) Zebbug regained the lead through a fine shot by Tiago Barbosa following a personal action that surprised St Lawrence’s goalie.

39’ St Lawrence were shocked and Zebbug were again dangerous through an attempt by Tiago Barbosa that was saved to a corner with difficulty by goalie Angelo Brignoli.

45+2’ The same goalkeeper kept the Spurs in contention with a good intervention to turn a free-kick by Tiago Barbosa to a corner.

HT (2-1)

St Lawrence came out more determined for the second period and practically dominated throughout the second half of the encounter.

53’ Matthias Michael Uzor received the ball inside Zebbug’s area but the defenders managed to deny the striker from concluding towards goal and cleared the danger to a corner.  From the same corner kick by Charlon Farrugia a header by Jason Theuma shaved the post.

65’ a shot by Matthias Michael Uzor from a good position ended away from Zebbug’s goal.

73’ Zebbug replied through a free kick by Tiago Barbosa that missed the target.

76’ Zebbug’s goalie Baskal Saliba was called to make a good save following a free kick by Charlon Farrugia.

77’ Zebbug could have extended their lead and sealed the win but a header by Tiago Barbosa from a corner kick by Elijah Xuereb ended just wide.

83’ (2-2) Zebbug were punished for the missed chance as St Lawrence levelled the score when a shot from long distance by Charlon Farrugia was partially saved by goalie Baskal and from the rebound substitute Charlton Mifsud addressed towards the small area where Jason Theuma was unmarked and netted easily with a tap-in.

85’ (2-3) St Lawrence increased their efforts and turned the result in their favour through a direct free kick by Charlon Farrugia that ended out of the reach of Zebbug’s keeper.

89’ Zebbug had their best opportunity to level the score but a shot by substitute Lucas Farrugia was well blocked by St Lawrence’s defence.

90+3’ (red card) Zebbug were reduced to 10 players when defender Peter Paul Buttigieg was sent off for abusive language.

90+4’ St Lawrence went close to score another goal but a free kick by Charlon Farrugia ended wide.
