SUMMARY

Xewkija Tigers extended their good start in the 2019/2020 season with a 3-0 win over Kercem Ajax.  With the points obtained from this match Xewkija became sole leaders on the table with a one-point lead over Nadur Youngsters and Ghajnsielem, and three points more than Victoria Hotspurs, although Nadur and Victoria have a game in hand.  In this match against Kercem the Tigers dictated matters for long stretches and at the end they deserved the convincing win. Xewkija however found it very difficult to convert their play into goals during most of the first half but they managed to take the lead just before the break so that they made sure of the win with two more goals scored during the second period.  Kercem tried to protect their area in an attempt to surprise their more quoted opponents with counter breaks but they never managed to recover from the goal conceded on the stroke of half time. In the second period Kercem also ended with a player less and they also lost an opportunity to score a consolation goal as they failed to convert a penalty near the end of the encounter.

TIMELINE

Xewkija seemed determined to take control of the play from the early stages of the encounter and took command of the midfield but Kercem’s defence was well deployed and managed to keep the danger away from their area for most of the time.

5’ Kercem’s keeper Vladimir Dizdarevic was well placed and managed to neutralise a cross-shot by Joseph Mario Vella.

16’ The same goalkeeper was again called to make a good intervention to clear a cross by Jose Carlos Nogueira Junior and from the following action, Xewkija’s Manwel Xerri took the ball but was stopped from concluding towards goal with a decisive intervention by Borja Polo Longarela.

24’ Xewkija’s Jose Carlos Nogueira Junior took the ball inside Kercem’s area from a cross by Manwel Xerri but the striker saw his effort ending away from goal.

29’ a good shot by Joseph Mario Vella following a corner action ended just wide.

42’ Xewkija could have concluded better bit a first-timer by Claudio Frances following a low cross by Jose Carlos ended wide.

45+3’ (penalty) The referee awarded a penalty to Xewkija as Kercem’s defender Sergio Martinez Villa handled the ball in an attempt to clear the danger from the area.

45+4’ (0-1) Jose Carlos Nogueira Junior converted from the spot to put Xewkija in the lead.

HT (0-1)

63’ Kercem’s goalie left his position in time to block a good effort by Jose Carlos Nogueira  who was alone inside Kercem’s area.

68’ (red card) Kercem were reduced to ten players when striker Andrea Debrincat was shown a second yellow card for simulation.

72’ Kercem’s Borja Polo Longarela had an attempt that was easily neutralised by Xewkija’s keeper Mark Grima.
