SUMMARY

In the first match from Match-Day 5 of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division Kercem Ajax obtained three precious points from a 2-1 win over SK Victoria Wanderers and consolidated their fifth position on the table with a comfortable gap from the other teams placed at the lower part of the table.  This was a direct clash from the relegation zone as both Kercem and Victoria were on equal points, together with Xaghra United, at the second place from the bottom of the table before this match. The Ajax and the Wanderers were aiming to obtain a positive result but Kercem prevailed over their opponents as they managed to capitalise form the best scoring opportunities and resisted to Victoria’s reaction particularly during the final stages of the encounter.

TIMELINE

Kercem came out more aggressive than their opponents and for some time they also held pressure on Victoriaàs defence.

1’ Kercem created their first serious attempt at goal after 50 seconds of play but a strike by Jean Paul Mizzi ended just high.

6’ An attempt by Kercem’s Elton Vella missed the target.

8’ The Wanderers replied through a low shot by Kersten Grima that ended wide.

17’ (0-1) Kercem opened the score through a header by Sergio Martinez Villa following a free kick by Milos Perisic, with the ball hitting the post before ending in goal.

21’ The Wanderers had an immediate reaction and could have created more danger when Doding Priso entered the area following a short corner kick but the striker saw his low shot that ended on the side of the net.

22’ (1-1) SK Victoria Wanderers levelled the score through an own-goal when Kercem’s keeper Vladimir Dizdarevic failed to clear the danger following a cross by Doding Priso, the ball hit Kercem’s defender Daniel Cassar and got deflected in the net.

Play became more balanced for the rest of the first half.

41’ The Wanderers created a potential scoring opportunity through an initiative by Doding Priso but the striker hot badly when he arrived close to goal and Kercem’s keeper Vladimir Dizdarevic saved the danger.

45’ The same goalkeeper was called to make another intervention to punch away with some difficulty a free kick by Victoria’s Sam Harland.

For the second period Kercem once again seemed more aggressive and regained territorial supremacy.

5’ (1-2) Kercem scored the goal that decided the issue when Milos Perisic moved away from the ball following a free kick by Jean Paul Mizzi, and Sergio Martinez Villa surprised Victoria’s defence and headed towards the corner.

Victoria’s immediate reaction was sterile as Kercem were well deployed at their defence.

21’ Kercem operated a dangerous action through Darko Krstic who entered the area but his close ranged shot was deflected to a corner.

26’ The Wanderers had a good opportunity to recover the score but a header by Oliver Curmi following a cross by Sam Harland from the left flank was saved with difficulty by Kercem’s keeper Vladimir Dizdarevic.

28’ Victoria’s Doding Priso had a shot from a good position that missed the target.

37’ The Wanderers increased their efforts and were once again dangerous through Sam Harland who entered the area in a counter break but the ball ended wide as he was challenged by Kercem’s central defender Sergio Martinez Villa.

38’ (red card) SK Victoria Wanderers ended with a player less on the field when David Udo Monday was sent off for a second yellow card received for a foul on Darko Krstic.

45+4’ The Wanderers lost a golden scoring opportunity to save the result on the stroke of stoppage time when Igor Misan released Sam Harland inside Kercem’s area from a free kick but the latter saw his low shot well saved by goalie Vladimir Dizdarevic.
