SUMMARY

Xaghra United, who were trailing by one goal at the end of the first half in their match against second division side Oratory Youths, produced a positive performance after the break and turned the result into a 3-1 win.  The protagonist of the match was undoubtedly Xaghra’s striker Lago Ander Gonzalo who scored the three goals for his side. Xaghra, therefore, earned a place with the last eight teams in the competition and in the next round, they will meet SK Victoria Wanderers.

TIMELINE

First division side Xaghra united tried to take command of play during the opening minutes but they found it more difficult than expected to convert their possession into good scoring opportunities.  On the other hand Oratory, who are currently being considered as serious challengers for promotion, gained confidence as time passed by and managed to end the first half with a one-goal lead.

10’ The first serious scoring opportunity arrived through a curling shot by Xaghra’s Gabriel Farrugia that ended wide.

20’ Oratory replied through a free kick by Bartomeu Perello Palou that was well saved by Xaghra’s keeper Lorjean Xuereb.

26’ Xaghra could have capitalised better when a corner kick by Joseph George Vella arrived to Lago Ander Gonzalo but the latter headed high from a good position.

32’ Xaghra’s keeper Lorjean Xuereb was again called to make an important intervention to deny Oratory’s Bartomeu Perello Palou from scoring directly from a free kick.

40’ Oratory’s keeper was also well placed and managed to block a free kick by Rodrigo Ost Dos Santos so that the defence cleared the danger to a corner.

42’ (0-1) Oratory opened the score when Bartomeu Perello Palou had a low cross that arrived to an unmarked Eric Gauci who placed behind Xaghra’s keeper with a low drive.

43’ Oratory could have added another goal when Paul Said entered Xaghra’s area but the striker had his attempt partially saved by goalie Lorjean Xuereb and from the rebound a shot by Chris Borg was cleared by the defence.

44’ Xaghra’s reaction arrived through a header by Raffael De Souza Ferreira, who took the ball following some hesitation by Oratory defence, which was neutralised by goalie Richard Sammut.

45’ The same Raffael De Souza Ferreira entered Oratory’s area with a personal action but his low shot was saved with difficulty to a corner by goalie Richard Sammut.

HT (0-1)

Xaghra came out for the second period determined to recover the score and produced pressure on Oratory’s defence.

47’ (1-1) Xaghra levelled the score through a low shot from close distance by Lago Ander Gonzalo after receiving from Marlon Mamo.

53’ Xaghra threatened Oratory’s rearguard with a strike by Joseph George Vella that ended wide.

68’ (2-1) Xaghra took the lead when Joseph George Vella unmarked Lago Ander Gonzalo who arrived on the ball before Oratory’s goalie and netted with a low drive.

76’ Xaghra could have added another goal when a cross from the right flank by Gabriel Farrugia arrived to Lago Ander Gonzalo but the latter hit badly form a good position and the ball ended wide.

82’ Oratory replied with an initiative by Jurgen Attard who delivered a cross inside Xaghra’s area that was met by Chris Borg who concluded from close distance but the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement.

86’ (3-1) Xaghra made sure of the qualification when a cross from the right flank by Rodrigo Ost Dos Santos passed over Oratory’s defence and Lago Ander Gonzalo took the ball from an unmarked position and netted with shot towards the far post.

FT (3-1)
