SUMMARY

Victoria Hotspurs scored five goals during the first half of their match against Kercem Ajax and put their minds at rest from three points which leave them at the third placing on the table.  This was the first match in the new year and of the second round for the two sides. The Hotspurs were aiming to make up for the disappointing defeat conceded in their previous match of the championship while Kercem, who had a number of regular players missing due to injuries and suspensions, had an objective to consolidate their mid-table position.  This was Victoria’s first match since they changed their coach Gotthard Conti with Guido Ugolotti but for this encounter the team was led by Shaun Bajada since the Italian coach took full leadership of the squad at the end of this match. The Hotspurs were determined to show that they are still the defenders of the title, despite their gap from the leaders, and dominated over their opponents for most pof the encounter.  Victoria’s Brazilian striker Elton Da Silva, who was making a return after a suspension of three matches, was a main protagonist as he scored three of the seven goals.

TIMELINE

Victoria Hotspurs took command of play from the very beginning and produced pressure on Kercem’s defence.

2’ Victoria Hotspurs went very close to scoring but a shot by Elton Da Silva following a low cross by Dylan Bellotti was blocked by Kercem’s defence.

3’ The Hotspurs were unlucky when a close ranged attempt by ta’ Christian Mercieca following a cross by Elton Da Silva was stopped by the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten.

4’ (0-1) Victoria Hotspurs opened the score through a strike form the edge of the area by Emiliano Lattes that ended out of the reach of Kercem’s keeper.

9’ Elton Da Silva went very close to add another goal for Victoria but his low drive aimed towards the far post following a personal action ended inches wide.

The Hotspurs reduced their momentum as time passed by and play took place mainly at the midfield for the following minutes.

22’ (red card) Kercem ended up playing with ten players when Borja Polo Longarela was sent off for handling the ball just outside his area as his closest opponent Elton Da Silva was in an unmarked position and could have easily concluded towards goal.

24’ (0-2) Victoria Hotspurs capitalised immediately and converted from the resultant free kick through the direct shot by Elton Da Silva that surprised Kercem’s goalkeeper.

26’ (0-3) Kercem’s goalie John Paul Cassar cleared badly from is area and the ball arrived to Emiliano Lattes who .lobbed from outside the area into an open goal.

38’ (0-4) Kercem continued to suffer Victoria’s supremacy and the Hotspurs scored another goal through a low shot by Elton Da Silva after receiving from Christian Mercieca.

41’ Victoria’s Elton Da Silva tried to score a spectacular goal but his first timer following a corner kick by Emiliano Lattes missed the target.

42’ (0-5) The Hotspurs scored their fifth goal when Elton Da Silva won a ball from the midfield and released Christian Mercieca who entered the area, had his first attempt partially saved by Kercem’s goalie John Paul Cassar, but the same Mercieca took the rebound and placed easily into an open goal.

44’ Victoria were again dangerous but a shot on the run by Andrew Mizzi ended high.

For the second period the match lost much of the interest as the outcome was already determined.  As a result Kercem managed to find more space and operated some offensive actions despite the fact that they had a player less on the field of play.

20’ Kercem protested for a penalty when Darko Krstic was challenged for the ball by Victoria’s Jason Pace.
