First division side Sannat Lions earned qualification to the quarter-final stage of the BOV GFA Cup with a 2-1 win over second-division side Qala Saints in a match from the Preliminary Round of the competition.  Sannat were the better side throughout the encounter and the win could have been with a larger margin.  However, Sannat were often erratic in their finishing and at the end they could have compromised their positive performance as Qala remained in contention to recover the deficit and to force extra time.  At the end, Sannat’s win matured with two goals scored during the first half-hour of the encounter.

Timeline

Sannat took command of play from the early stages.

6’ Sannat had a goal scored by Brandon Said that was disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper.

9’ (1-0) Sannat opened the score when Brandon Said released Damon Hili within Qala’s area and the latter concluded in goal with a low shot.

29’ (2-0)  Sannat doubled the score with a shot from an angled position by Milos Perisic that ended out of the reach of Qala’s keeper Franco Buttigieg.

31’ In another offensive action by Sannat a shot by Joseph Zammit ended wide.

41’ Qala replied with an effort by Stefan Farrugia that ended just high.

43’ Sannat once again threatened Qala’s defence but a curling shot by Joseph Zammit ended wide.

HT (2-0)

Qala came out for the second period more motivated to recover the score.

1’ (2-1) Qala reduced the deficit when Samwel Muscat passed to Joseph Buhagiar inside Sannat’s area and the latter placed in goal form an ideal position.

8’ Sannat were again dangerous through a free kick by Joseph Zammit that was well saved by Qala’s substitute goalkeeper Matthew Muscat.

11’ Sannat’s Joseph Zammit had a goal that was disallowed for an offside infringement.

12’ (penalty saved)  Sannat lost a good opportunity to regain a two-goal lead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by goalie Matthew Muscat on Joseph Zammit but the shot from the spot kick by Damon Hili was well saved by Qala’s keeper and the defence cleared the danger from the area.

30’ Qala’s goalie Matthew Muscat was once again called to make difficult saves following two consecutive attempts by Damon Hili and Brandon Said.

36’ Sannat could have capitalised better but a header by Lucas Barreto Da Silva from a free kick by Joseph Zammit was well saved by Qala’s keeper Matthew Muscat.

37’ Sannat were also unlucky when a header by Joseph Zammit from a corner kick by Milos Perisic was stopped by the crossbar.

39’ Qala had their last scoring opportunity but a low shot by Joseph Buhagiar form an angled position ended wide.

45’ Sannat were gain dangerous through a personal action by substitute Paul Said who entered the area but saw his shot that ended on the side of the net.
