In the first match of the BOV Gozo Football League of the second division for the season 2020/2021, Munxar Falcons registered an impressive 7-0 win over St Lawrence Spurs.  Munxar dominated throughout the ninety minutes over their opponents and the final score actually reflects the superiority expressed on the field of play.  The Falcons seemed in a good shape in this first match as their new signings, particularly Joseph Grima and Steve Dimech, contributed to strengthen their potential in attack.  The outcome of this match is very encouraging for Munxar but at the same time it exposed the limitations of the Spurs as the latter do not seem in a position to be among the best competitive sides in the category.

Timeline

Munxar had an excellent start and piles pressure on St Lawrence’s rear guard form the early stages.

10’ The Falcons missed a good opportunity to open the score but a header from an ideal position by Joseph Grima from a corner kick by Luke Meilak ended wide.

15’ Munxar’s Joseph Grima released Ayesller Carvalho but the latter saw his shot that was partially saved by goalie Justin Grima and the defence cleared the danger from the area.

17’ (1-0) Munxar opened the score when a cross from the right flank by Luke Meilaq arrived to an unmarked Luke Attard who placed easily in goal with a low shot.

24’ Munxar’s Luke Meilaq once again delivered a good cross from the right flank but Brazilian striker Ayesller Carvalho headed wide.

29’ Ayesller Carvalho entered St Lawrence’s area with a personal action but his attempt ended away from goal.

33’ Another good header by Munxar’s Joseph Grima from a corner kick by Luke Meilaq ended high.

35’ Munxar were unlucky as a shot from outside the area by Joseph Grima hit the crossbar and from the rebound St Lawrence’s keeper recovered in time to clear the ball to a corner before Kenneth Mizzi could conclude form close distance.

36’ (2-0) From the same corner action, taken by Luke Meilaq, Munxar doubled the score as a header by Ayesller Carvalho was stopped by the post and Neville Haber took the opportunity and pushed the ball in goal from close distance.

42’ St Lawrence’s keeper Justin Grima denied Munxar from scoring another goal when he managed to clear the ball to a corner before Luke Meilaq could conclude from a good position.

HT (2-0)

The Spurs failed to produce a reaction and Munar continued to dictate matter from the first minutes of play of the second period.

3’ Munxar’s Kenneth Mizzi headed over the crossbar from close distance following an inviting cross by Luke Meilaq.

4’ (3-0) – penalty – Munxar were awarded a penalty for a foul by Christian Grima on Kenneth Mizzi and Ayesller Carvalho extended the lead for his side with his shot from the spot kick.

9’ Ayesller Carvalho passed through St Lawrence’s defence with a personal action but his low shot missed the target.

18’ Munxar could have added another goal but a shot by Ayesller Carvalho was blocked by goalie Justin Grima and from the rebound the attempt by Joseph Grima ended high.

19’ St Lawrence had their only attempt towards Munxar’s goal through and effort by Mohammed Senussi Telessi that was neutralised without difficulty by keeper Daniel Galea.

26’ (4-0) Munxar’s substitute Steve Dimech added another goal when he placed behind goalie Justin Grima with a shot from close distance.

34’ (5-0) Steve Dimech released substitute Derek Paul Borg inside St Lawrence’s area and the latter concluded easily in goal with a low drive.

36’ (6-0) The sixth goal of the encounter arrived through an initiative by substitute Derek Paul Borg who passed to the other substitute Robert Grima and the latter fired in goal with a good shot.

43’ (7-0) Munxar sealed the win with the seventh goal that arrived through a lob by Steve Dimech that was out of the reach of St Lawrence’s goalie.

FT (7-0)
