Nadur Youngsters started the defence of the title won last season a win over Xaghra United.  Despite the final score, the win for Nadur was hard-earned as they only managed to obtain the full points at stake with three goals scored during the final stages of the encounter.  Nadur took the field of play as favourites to obtain three easy points but despite their strong potential, the Youngsters found it extremely difficult to convert their territorial supremacy in goals.  This was Nadur first match of the season and they showed that they lacked match practice as they were often very erratic in their finishing.  On the other hand, the final result of the encounter was very disappointing for Xaghra.  The inexperienced side struggled throughout the match to resist their more quoted opponents and managed to remain in contention for more than eighty minutes of play.  Xaghra grew in confidence as time passed by and also threatened Nadur’s defence on at least two occasions.  However, Xaghra compromised the possibility to register a surprise result by conceding three late goals.

Timeline

As expected Nadur took command of play from the very beginning and went very close to score a goal during the opening stages of the encounter.

2’ Nadur’s Ederson Bruno Domingos passed through Xaghra’s rear guard from the left flank but from his low cross a first timer by Andrea Debrincat hit the crossbar.

5’ Nadur were again dangerous through an attempt directly from a free kick by Chris Camilleri that ended just over the crossbar.

19’ Nadur’s Ian Xuereb entered Xaghra’s area from the right flank and from his low cross a first timer by Chris Camilleri was well block by defender Steve Sultana to a corner.

20’ Xaghra’s goalie Owen Attard was called to make a good save to turn to a corner a low shot by Ederson Bruno Domingos who was released by Chris Camilleri.

25’ The same goalkeeper was again called to make a difficult intervention to save a close ranged shot by Nadur’s Michael Paul Camilleri.

26’ Nadur went very close to scoring but a cross shot by Ederson Bruno Domingos was topped by the crossbar.

31’ In another dangerous action by Nadur, Chris Camilleri delivered the ball inside Xaghra’s area from a free kick but Rodolfo Soares headed badly from a good position and the ball ended wide.

33’ Nadur’s Chris Camilleri had an attempt that was neutralised by Xaghra’s keeper Owen Attard.

34’ A strike by Nadur’s Ederson Bruno Domingos ended just over the crossbar.

38’ Xaghra’s keeper Owen Attard was well placed and managed to block a low shot by Gennaro Hili after receiving from Ederson Bruno Domingos.

41’ Nadur’s keeper Steve Sultana was called into action and saved his goal when he cleared the ball in time before Matthias Cordina could hit towards an open goal following a rare break by the Blues.

HT (0-0)

Play during the second period continued to be dictated by Nadur, while Xaghra continued to defend and also operate sporadic offensive actions.

1’ Xaghra could have opened the score when Nadur’s defence hesitated to protect their area and the ball arrived to an unmarked Etienne Xiberras, who came in as a substitute for the second period, who saw his low shot well blocked by Nadur’s keeper Steve Sultana.

Nadur increased their efforts as time passed by.

13’ Nadur went again close to scoring through a fine strike from outside the area by Gennaro Hili that ended inches over Xaghra’s goal.

16’ Xaghra’s keeper Owen Attard blocked with his foot a low shot by Ederson Bruno Domingos and from the rebound Nadur’s substitute Gabriel Farrugia had his attempt that was cleared by the defence.

22’ Nadur created another good opportunity to open the score but two consecutive attempts by Michael Paul Camilleri, after receiving from substitute Owen Paul Bugeja, were blocked by Xaghra’s defence.

24’ Nadur’s Gabriel Farrugia went once again close to scoring but his header following a cross by Gennaro Hili ended away from Xaghra’s goal.

26’ Nadur conceded another dangerous action as Xaghra operated a break and Francesco Attard entered alone inside the area but Nadur’s keeper Steve Sultana came to the rescue for his side for the third time in the encounter as he managed to block with difficulty the good attempt by Xaghra’s young striker.

27’ In an immediate reply by Nadur a strike by Ederson Bruno Domingos was well saved by goalie Owen Attard.

32’ The same goalkeeper was again called to make a good intervention when he partially saved a shot by Gennaro Hili after receiving from a free kick by Ederson Bruno Domingos.

36’ (1-0) Nadur managed to break the deadlock and took the lead when a low cross shot by Ian Xuereb was deflected to a corner by the defence and from the same corner kick taken by Gennaro Hili, Gabriel Farrugia surprised the defence with a fine header.

39’ Nadur kept insisting and in another occasion Owen Peter Bugeja had a shot form a good position that was weak and goalie Owen Attard blocked the danger and the defence cleared the danger from the area.

42’ (2-0) Nadur practically made sure of the three points by scoring the second goal that arrived through a shot from close distance by Gabriel Farrugia following a cross from the left flank by Gennaro Hili.

43’ (3-0) Nadur added another goal when Ederson Bruno Domingos entered Xaghra’s territory with a personal action and placed in goal with a low drive as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger.
