SK Victoria Wanderers registered a 4-1 win over Kercem Ajax in a match from the Preliminary Round of the BOV GFA Cup and took one of the places of the last eight teams in the competition.  The two sides were facing each other for the second time in the space of one week as they played each other the previous weekend in a clash from Match-Day 1 of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division.  Kercem were favourites for this match as they defeated the Wanderers with the odd goal from five in the match from the championship but the Wanderers were more motivated for this match and obtained the win by scoring two goals in each half.  Kercem conceded an early goal and struggled to produce an effective reaction so that they failed to convert their offensive play into good scoring opportunities.  Striker Audgustine James Obaje was Victoria’s protagonist in this match as he registered a personal hat-trick and he was also a continuous threat to Kercem’s defence.

Timeline

The Wanderers seemed determined from the early stages to make up for the disappointing performance in the match against Kercem during the previous weekend

6’ (1-0 penalty) SK Victoria Wanderers were awarded a penalty for a foul by Joshua Buttigieg on Gabriel Cardona and Audgustine James Obaje converted from the spot kick despite the attempt by goalie Gaetano Bugeja to save the shot and the Wanderers took the driving seat for the rest of the encounter.

Kercem’s reaction was sterile while the Wanderers gained confidence and controlled play in the midfield.

15’ Victoria were again dangerous through a low shot by Emerson Zammit from a good position that ended wide.

As time passed by Kercem tried to increase their efforts but they failed to produce danger towards Victoria’s goal.

30’ Victoria Wanderers could have created more danger when Sam Harland released Emerson Zammit just outside Kercem’s area but the latter concluded badly and the goalkeeper saved without difficulty.

32’ The Wanderers once again threatened Kercem’s defence but a close ranged shot by Audgustine James Obaje following a corner kick by Emerson Zammit ended high.

44’ (2-0) Victoria Wanderers doubled the score when they operated a counter break and Sam Harland released Audgustine James Obaje who entered the area and placed in goal with a low drive.

45+1’ Victoria’s keeper Giacomo Ratto denied Kercem from re-opening the issue when he managed to block an inviting low cross by Joshua Buttigieg aimed to Brazilian striker Samuel Saldanha.

HT (2-0)

Kercem came out more aggressive for the second period but they continued to find it difficult to created good scoring opportunities.

9’ Victoria’s Sam Harland had a good attempt that ended wide.

16’ Kercem protested for a penalty alleging handling by Victoria’s defence in front of the goal mouth in a melee that resulted from a corner action.

22’ Kercem lost a good opportunity to reduce the deficit when Samuel Saldanha had a low shot from an angled position but the goalkeeper deflected the ball and Kercem’s strikers failed to connect.

23’ The Ajax created a similar opportunity through a low shot cross by Anthony Zammit but the ball ended wide.

29’ Victoria’s goalie Giacomo ratto was well placed to neutralise without difficulty a shot by substitute Nathaniel Mercieca.

39’ (3-0) Victoria Wanderers practically made sure of the qualification by scoring the third goal when Audgustine James Obaje released Sam Harland in a counter break and the latter entered the area before he fired in goal with a low shot.

42’ (penalty) Kercem were awarded a penalty for a foul by substitute Nicholas Grech on Nathaniel Mercieca and Samuel Saldanha placed in goal with his shot from the spot kick.
