Gharb Rangers obtained their second win in the campaign from their match against bottom-placed St Lawrence Spurs and with the points obtained they moved to the second place on the table with just three points behind the leaders. In this match, the two sides needed a win for different reasons as Gharb are aiming to earn a place on the table which leaves them with the possibility to challenge for the title, while St Lawrence needed a win to earn their first points after three consecutive defeats in their first three matches of the league. The match was actually quite balanced during the first hour but Gharb produced a good reaction after they conceded the equaliser and ended up obtaining a convincing win.
Timeline
Platy was rather balanced during the first half as the two defensive departments prevailed over the respective strikers. As a result the two sides found it extremely difficult to produce dangerous action during the first half.
18’ The first serious attempt towards goal arrived from Gharb Rangers but a header by Marvic Grima following a corner kick by Ruben Zammit was well saved by goalie Liam Gatt.
24’ St Lawrence replied through a good action by Mohammed Senussi Telessi who entered the area from the left flank but from his low inviting cross, Elijah Xuereb had his shot on the run that was well saved by Gharb’s goalie John Paul Cassar.
39’ (0-1) Gharb opened the score through a fine header by Ruben Zammit following a cross from the left flank by Marvic Grima.

The match became much more interesting after the break as the two sides managed to produce more offensive play.
4’ St Lawrence had a good effort through Mohammed Senussi Telessi, who passed through Gharb’s defence but his final shot was saved to a corner by goalie John Paul Cassar.
5’ Gharb replied with a free kick from long distance by Marvic Grima that was partially saved by St Lawrence’s keeper Liam Gatt and the defence continued to clear the danger from the goalmouth.
8’ (1-1) St Lawrence levelled the score when an attempt by Charles Mercieca from a corner action was blocked by the defence and the ball arrived to Mohammed Senussi Telessi who took the opportunity and netted from close distance.
24’ (1-2) Gharb regained the lead when a free-kick form long-distance by Mario Theuma was stopped by the crossbar and from the rebound Charles Hili fired on goal.
26’ Gharb could have added another goal when Milos Stojanovic released Luke Attard with a header and the latter addressed towards goal with a low drive as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger but the ball was stopped by the base of the post.
30’ In another dangerous action by Gharb, a shot from an angled position by Luke Attard was well saved by St Lawrence’s keeper Liam Gatt.
32’ (1-3) penalty – Gharb were awarded a penalty for a foul by Daniel Micallef on Charles Hili and Milos Stojanovic converted from the spot-kick to put Gharb’s minds at rest from the three points.
45+’2’ Gharb sealed the win by scoring the fourth goal as another free-kick from long distance by Mario Theuma was partially saved by goalie Liam Gatt and from the rebound, Charles Hili pushed the ball in the net from a close distance.
