Munxar Falcons took the second place on the table with three point s obtained from a 5-3 win over bottom placed St Lawrence Spurs.  With this result Munxar remain the most serious challengers to the current leaders Qala Saints.  For this match St Lawrence tried to make up for the heavy defeat conceded in the match against Munxar of the first round but the Spurs compromised their positive performance during the opening minutes during the final stages of the first half so that they are still without a pint from their five matches in the campaign.  On the other hand Munxar confirmed their strong potential in attack and also showed a strong character as they recovered from an early shock and paved the way to the convincing win by scoring five goals during the first half.  Munxar’s striker Ayesller Carvalho was the hero for his side by scoring three of the five goals.

Timeline

St Lawrence came out more aggressive and managed to take the lead but Munxar produced a determined reaction, took control of play and ended the first half with a four-goal lead.

4’ (1-0) The Spurs opened the score through a header by Mohammed Senussi Telessi following a free kick by Karl Formosa.

Munxar produced a determined reaction.

13’ (1-1) Munxar levelled the score when Francesco Cini delivered a cross inside St Lawrence’s area from the left flank and Ayesller Carvalho arrived on the ball before goalie Liam Gatt so that the Brazilian striker placed easily into an open goal.

Play was well contested during the following minutes as the two sides tried to take the lead.

25’ The Spurs could have capitalised better but James Grima concluded wide from a good position following a free kick by Karl Formosa.

28’ St Lawrence’s defender Louis Buttgieg risked to commit an own goal when he hit badly in an attempt to clear a free kick by Joseph Grima but the goalkeeper recovered his position and saved the danger to a corner.

29’ (1-2) Munxar turned the result in their favour when St Lawrence’s goalie Liam Gatt cleared within his area a cross from the right flank by Luke Meilak and the ball arrived to Joseph Grima who .lobbed easily into an open goal.

St Lawrence were shocked.

31’ (1-3) Munxar increased their lead through a lob by Ayesller Carvalho after receiving from Peter Debono.

36’ (1-4) – penalty: Munxar were awarded a penalty for handling by St Lawrence’s Daniel Micallef following pressure by Steve Dimech and Ayesller Carvalho converted form the spot kick.

43’ St Lawrence could have reduced the deficit but James Grima hesitated to conclude when he received the ball inside Munxar’s area so that he lost the opportunity to conclude towards goal form an ideal position.

45’ (1-5) Munxar scored their fifth goal when Steve Dimech passed backwards inside St Lawrence’s area to Derek Paul Borg and the latter fired in goal with a shot on the run.

HT (1-5)

Munxar reduced their pressure after the break and the Spurs took the opportunity to operate more offensive play.

8’ (2-5) St Lawrence reduced the deficit when Munxar’s defence failed to clear the ball from the area and Karl Formosa placed in goal with a low shot.

13’ Munxar could have added another goal but a low drive by Steve Dimech following a cross by Francesco Cini ended wide.

20’ In another good action by Munxar a low shot by Ayesller Carvalho from outside the area was saved to a corner by goalie Liam Gatt.

34’ The same goalkeeper was well placed to neutralise a strike form an angled position by Munxar’s Luke Meilak.

39’ St Lawrence’s keeper Liam Gatt denied Munxar from scoring another goal when he went out of his position and blocked an initiative by Peter Debono who entered the area with a personal action.

41’ St Lawrence replied through a strike by Mohammed Senussi Telessi that was blocked by Munxar’s keeper.

44’ The same Senussi Telessi had an attempt that ended just wide from Munxar’s goal.

45+1’ (3-5) St Lawrence made the score more respectable by scoring the third goal that arrived through a low shot by Karl Formosa
