Sannat Lions extended their good moment of form and obtained the full points at stake form a 2-1 win over Oratory Youths.  This was Sannat’s third consecutive win and as a result they moved to the upper positions on the table and opened a comfortable lead over the other teams who are struggling to keep away from the red zone.  With this result Oratory remain at the bottom of the table without a point form five matches in the championship.

The match turned out to be well contested as each side prevailed over the opponents for a half each.  Sannat were the better side during the first period, scored two goals and created some other very good scoring opportunities.  On the other hand the Youths produced a determined reaction after the break but they found it very difficult to convert their play into good scoring opportunities so that they only managed to reduce the deficit.

Timeline

Sannat took command of play from the early stages of the encounter and produced continuous danger on Oratory’s defence.

2’ (0-1) Sannat opened the score when Oratory’s goalie failed to keep the ball from a throw-in so that debutant Hugo Santa Rosa Cruz took the ball and placed easily in goal.

3’ Oratory replied through a weak shot by Keith Farrugia after receiving from Karolis Chvedukas but Sannat’s keeper Lorjean Xuereb was well placed and saved without difficulty.

5’ Sannat were again dangerous through a header by Brandon Said from a corner action but the ball ended wide.

10’ Sannat went very close to score a second goal through a strike form outside the area by Joseph Zammit after receiving from Mario Mifsud but the ball just missed the target.

21’ Oratory protested for a penalty when Karolis Chvedukas ended on the floor inside Sannat’s area as he was trying to pass through the defence in a personal action.

27’ Sannat’s Joseph Zammit had a good header from a corner action that ended wide.

29’ (0-2) Sannat doubled the score through a close ranged shot by Brandon Said following and inviting low cross by Hugo Santa Rosa Cruz.

31’ Oratory’s keeper Richard Sammut left his position in time to block the ball and denied Sannat’s Brandon Said from hitting towards goal so that the defence recovered the position and cleared the danger form the area.

35’ Oratory once again protested for a penalty when Ssannat’s defender Omar Calleja clear the ball from Karolis Chvedukas and the latter ended on the floor inside the area.

36’ Sannat could have created more danger when Damon Hili passed to Fabian Xuereb inside Oratory’s area but the latter hit badly and the ball ended away from goal.

38’ Sannat’s Damon Hili went close to scoring but his attempt following a personal action was deflected to a corner by Oratory’s keeper Richard Sammut.

39’ In another dangerous action by Sannat, Brazilian striker Hugo Santa Rosa Cruz hit badly from a good position following a cross from the left flank so that the ball ended away from goal.

The Yopuths came out for the second period in a better shape and seemed determined to recover the result.

3’ a shot by Oratory’s Paul Rapa following a prolonged action was blocked by Sannat’s defence.

11’ Sannat replied through an attempt by Brandon Said that was neutralised by Oratory’s keeper Richard Sammut.

15’ Oratory almost took advantage of a back pass by Sannat’s defence to the goalkeeper but the latter managed to recover his position and cleared the ball away from the area to deny striker Karolis Chvedukas from hitting towards goal.

22’ Sannat’s keeper Lorjean Xuereb was called to make an important intervention to take the ball before Karolis Chvedukas could met an inviting cross by Samuel Azzopardi.

25’ (1-2) Oratory re-opened the issue when a strike form outside the area by Karlois Chvedukas was blocked by the defence and the ball arrived to Eric Gauci who surprised Sannat’s keeper with a fine curling shot.

32’ The Youths threatened Sannat’s defence through a shot by Pablo Nunez Del Castillo that missed the target.

Oratory increased their efforts in an attempt to recover the deficit.

44’ Oratory could have levelled the score when Samuel Azzopardi delivered the ball inside Sannat’s area from a free kick form long distance but the attempt by Pablo Nunez Del Castillo was partially blocked by goalie Lorjean Xuerreb and from the rebound the close rnaged shot by Karolis Chvedukas shaved the post.

45+4’ Oratory had their last opportunity to score the equaliser but a header by Karolis Chvedukas following a cross by substitute Sintayehu Curmi ended high.
