Zebbug Rovers obtained three precious points from a 2-1 win over Munxar Falcons so that the former regained their status among the teams who may challenge the current leaders for promotion.  This was Zebbug’s second win over Munxar in the campaign and with the three points obtained the Rovers took away the second place on the table from the same Falcons.

For this match the two sides had the motivation to obtain a win.  Zebbug were aiming to obtain their third win in the campaign and move closer to the top position, while Munxar seemed determined to make up for the defeat conceded against the same Zebbug in the match between the two sides of the first round and needed a win to consolidate their second spot on the table.  As a result the match turned out to be well contested and the win could have gone either way.

Timeline:

Munxar held command of play for most of the first period but they were often erratic so that they failed to convert their superiority in goals.

6’ Zebbug’s goalie Baskal Saiba was well placed and managed to blocked a close ranged attempt by Ayesller Carvalho following a prolonged action inside Zebbug’s area.

7’ Munxar were unlucky when a fine header by Francesco Cini, following a cross from the left flank by Ayesller Carvalho, was stopped by the post with the goalkeeper beaten

16’ In another good action by Munxar, Ayesller Carvalho passed to Joseph Grima but the latter had his low shot that was saved without difficulty by goalie Baskal Saliba.

23’ The same goalkeeper was called to make a good intervention and blocked a close ranged effort by Ayesller Carvalho and Zebbug’s defender Ian Buttigieg cleared the ball from the goalmouth before M|unxar’s Steve Dimech could take the rebound.

24’ Munxar’s Francesco Cini had a fine strike from outside the area but the ball ended wide.

34’ Zebbug’s first attempt towards Munxar’s goal arrived through a header by Carl Gauci from a corner kick by Kennth Bonnici but the ball ended wide

41’ The Falcons were again dangerous through a shot from outside the area by Luke Meilak, following a free kick, that was blocked to a corner by the defence.

43’ Munxar could have created more danger towards Zebbug’s goal but Steve Dimech failed to connect to an inviting low cross from the left flank by Ayseller Carvalho.

45’ Munxar’s goalie Daniel Galea was at the right place and saved without difficulty a free kick by Kenneth Mercieca.

HT (0-0)

For the second period Munxar continued to dictate matter during the opening stages but they continued to find it difficult to create danger and as time passed by Zebbug became more dangerous ion their play.

14’ (0-1) Zebbug surprised Munxar and opened the score when the defence cleared badly from their area so that Lucas Farrugia took the opportunity and lobbed easily over the goalkeeper who was out of his position.

19’ Zebbug could have doubled the score but a header by Carl Gauci from a corner kick by Lucas Farrugia ended just over the crossbar.

20’ Zebbug were again dangerous but a shot by debutant Matthias Michael Uzor was well blocked by goalie Daniel Galea.

21’ Munxar were shocked and continued to suffer pressure and the Rovers created two potential scoring opportunities within the space of one minute.  In the first occasion a strike by Emanuel Scerri from outside the area was saved by Munxar’s keeper and in the other occasion Lucas Farrugia received an inviting ball inside Munxar’s area but the striker hesitated and hit badly so that the goalkeeper saved without difficulty.

26’ (1-1) Munxar managed to recover form a difficult moment and were also awarded a penalty for a foul by Manuel Camilleri on Ayesller Carvalho and the same Brazilian striker converted form the spot kick.

30’ Munxar could have turned the result in their favour but a low cross by Ayesller Carvalho passed in front of Zebbug’s goal as striker Steve Dimech missed the connection for a tap-in.

34’ (1-2) Zebbug regained the lead when Matthias Michael Uzor took the ball outside Munxar’s area passed through the defence and netted with a fine shot that was out of the reach of Munxar’s keeper.

Munxar were demoralised and during the final stages Zebbug could have made sure of the win by scoring at least another goal.

41’ Zebbug’s substitute Aaron Touarha had a low shot that was well saved by Munxar’s keeper Daniel Galea.

45+3’ The same goalkeeper denied Zebbug from scoring a third goal when he blocked a strike from outside the area by Zebbug’s Touarha.
