Sannat Lions ended their 2021/2022 season on an excellent note as they retained their Division I status with a convincing win over the runners-up of the second division Munxar falcons. In this Promotion/Relegation, Play-off Sannat Lions confirmed their good moment of form which saw them defending their position on the table to avoid the relegation.

Munxar struggled to be serious challengers to the more quoted opponents but they compromised the possibility to obtain a surprise win by failing to capitalise on some good scoring opportunities and by conceding two goals before the end of the first half.  Sannat in fact paved the way to the win by taking the break with a three-goal lead and administered play throughout the second period.

Timeline

Sannat took command of play from the early stages and managed to take the lead in their first serious attempt toward Munxar’s goal.  Munxar missed some good opportunities to level the score so that Sannat regained control of play and increased their lead with two goals scored before halftime.

16’ (1-0) Sannat opened the score when Aaron Azzopardi passed inside Munxar’s area to Henry Fabian Solis and the latter fired in goal after turning around his direct opponent.

20’ The Falcons replied through a strike from long distance by Ayesller Carvalho that was neutralised by goalie Lorjean Xuereb.

20’ Munxar missed a very good scoring opportunity when Kenneth Mizzi entered the area from the left flank and from his cross, Luke Portelli incredibly hit badly and the ball ended wide.

21’ Sannat were again dangerous through a shot from an angled position by Fabian John Xuereb that missed the target.

23’ In another offensive action by Sannat, a shot from outside the area by Marlon Mamo ended just wide.

27’ Munxar once again threatened Sannat’s defence with a shot by Mario Azzopardi that was saved to a corner by goalie Lorjean Xuereb and from the same corner action Munxar’s John Paul Grima incredibly hit badly from an ideal position and the ball ended wide.

36’ Munxar’s goalie Daniel Galea was called to make a good save to block a close-range header by substitute Nicholas Grima following a corner kick by Aaron Azzopardi.

37’ Sannat were again dangerous when Nebojsa Biculjevic passed through Munxar’s rearguard with a personal action but his shot ended just over the crossbar.

42’ (2-0) Sannat doubled the score when skipper Fabian John Xuereb released Nicholas Grima on the right flank and the latter had his shot from an angled position that got a deflection and ended at the far end of Munxar’s goal.

45’ (3-0) Sannat practically made sure of the win in this match by scoring the third goal that arrived from a corner kick by Aaron Azzopardi that was headed inside the area by Lucas Baretto Da Silva and Henry Fabian Solis took the ball and concluded in the net in his second attempt as his first effort was partially saved by the goalkeeper.

HT (3-0)

Second Half

The match lost much interest after the break as Sannat took the foot off the pedal while Munxar continued to find it very difficult to create danger within Sannat’s territory.

11’ Munxar’s substitute goalkeeper Damien Spiteri, who entered the field of play for the second period and who was marking his 100th appearance with Munxar, was at the right place to neutralise without difficulty a shot from outside the area by Fabian John Xuereb.

23’ The same goalkeeper made a good save to neutralise a shot by Marlon Mamo following a personal action.

28’ Sannat’s Aaron Azzopardi had a good attempt directly from a free-kick that was saved to a corner by Munxar’s keeper Damien Spiteri.

32’ Munxar’s goalie continued to be involved in the play and once again he denied Sannat from adding another goal as he blocked a close-range shot by Lucas Baretto Da Silva following a personal action.

35’ Sannat missed a good opportunity to increase their lead when Henry Fabian Solis passed through Munxar’s defence, turned around the goalkeeper but concluded badly with an open goal at his mercy.

37’ Munxar had their first attempt towards Sannat’s goal through a shot by Ayesller Carvalho that was saved without difficulty by goalie Lorjean Xuereb.

39’ The same goalkeeper was at the right place to save a shot by Mario Azzopardi after receiving from Ayesller Carvalho.

41’ Munxar could have created more danger when Ayesller Carvalho unmarked substitute Michael Tabone but the latter hit badly from a good position and the goalkeeper saved without difficulty.

44’ Sannat had their last opportunity to score another goal but a strike by substitute Matthias Michael Uzor was blocked by Munxar’s goalie Damien Spiteri.

45’ Munxar went closest to scoring a consolation goal but an effort by Ayesller Carvalho was saved to a corner by goalie Lorjean Xuereb.
