In the main match of Match Day-3 of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division, reigning champions Nadur Youngsters obtained a convincing 3-1 win over the main challengers for the title Ghajnsielem.  This was Nadur’s third consecutive win in the championship and with the points obtained they remain the only side with maximum points from three matches.

This was the second match of the season between the two sides and Nadur and Ghajnsielem face each other in the GFA Super Cup final where Ghajnsielem won the honour with a 4-2 win over the rivals.  In this match Nadur seemed determined to take revenge for the defeat conceded at the beginning of the month and produced an impressive display where the Blacks were not allowed the possibility to remain in contention for a positive result.  The Youngsters dominated throughout the first half and took the break with a two-goal lead.  They added a third goal just after the restart and administered play with authority until the final whistle.

Ghajnsielem had a disappointing performance as they seemed shocked and found it extremely difficult to produce the offensive play expressed during the previous matches this season.  Ghajnsielem lost concentration and were erratic in their passing.  Ghajnsielem only increased their pressure during the final stages of the encounter but there was not much time left for them to recover the deficit.

Timeline:

Nadur seemed more motivated during the opening Stages and held the initiative of play.  They also managed to score an early goal and Ghajnsielem were shocked so that the latter struggled to produce a reaction and Nadur could have ended the first half in the lead with a larger margin.

5’ The Youngsters created the first serious scoring opportunity bu a first timer by Gennaro Hili from an ideal position following a cross from the right flank by Ian Xuereb missed the target.

15’ (1-0) Nadur opened the score when Marcelo Jr Barbosa took the ball from Ghajnsielem’s defender when the rear guard was exposed and the Brazilian striker entered the area and fired in goal with a fine strike.

24’ Nadur could have created more danger when Joseph Zammit produced a personal action, entered the area and exchanged the ball with Igor Nedeljkovic but the same Zammit had his low shot aimed towards the far post that passed in front of Ghajnsielem’s goalmouth and the defence recovered and cleared the danger.

30’ (2-0) Nadur converted their supremacy during the first part of the match by scoring a second goal that arrived through a counter break where Marcelo Barbosa exchange the ball with Igor Nedeljkovic and the latter netter with a fie towards the roof of the net.

34’ (post) Nadur missed an opportunity ti score a third goal when Joseph Mario Vella received the ball at an unmarked position following a counter break, the latter addressed the ball towards an open goal as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger but the ball hit the base of the post.

39’ Ghajnsielem had their best scoring opportunity of the first half when Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos delivered the ball inside Nadur’s area from a free kick, the defence failed to clear the danger but Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa incredibly concluded over the crossbar from a good position.

41’ Nadur were again dangerous when Gabriel Farrugia passed to Joseph Mario Vella inside Ghajnsielem’s area but the latter hit badly from a good position and the ball ended away from goal.

HT (2-0)

Second Half

Nadur had an excellent start after the break and increased their lead so that they continued to play with more confidence and for most of the time they neutralised Ghajnsielem’s efforts to re-open the issue.  The second half therefore lacked scoring opportunities at the two ends of the field. However, Ghajnsielem increased their efforts during the final phase of the encounter so that they forced their opponents to defend with many players and scored a goal that re-open their hopes that they could save the result.

1’ (3-0) Nadur made up for to missed chances near the end of the first half and scored the third goal after just 23 seconds of play into the second period when Igor Nedeljkovic entered the area from the rght flank and from his low cross Marcelo Jr Barbosa arrived in time to deposit the ball in goal with a tap-in.

4’ (post) Ghajnsielem went very close to reduce the deficit but a shot from a good position by Alberto Xuereb after receiving from Patrick Dos Santos Cruz hit the post.

26’ (3-1)  Ghajnsielem reduced the score when Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa entered Nadur’s area with a personal action and his shot took a deflection by the defence that misplaced the goalkeeper and the ball ended in goal.

32’ Ghajnsielem kept insisting and went closest to score a second goal when Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos had a low shot from outside the area that was well saved by Nadur’s keeper Steve Sultana.
