Munxar Falcons obtained a 2-0 win over St Lawrence Spurs in the first match of the season for the two sides and with this result, the Falcons may gain confidence in their attempt to achieve more positive results and better placing than they did in the previous seasons. Both Munxar and St Lawrence came out for this match with the intention to obtain a win but for most of the encounter the two defensive departments prevailed over the respective strikers and serious scoring opportunities were rare. Overall, Munxar produced more danger towards St Lawrence’s goal and therefore the win was deserved. The outcome of this encounter matured with two goals scored during the first part of the second period by Brazilian striker Vitor Gabriel Sourez Souza, who also ended up being the hero for his new side.
Timeline:
Munxar saw more of the ball for most of the first period but overall they failed to capitalise on the superiority as the Spurs were well-organised and managed to defend their area. The Falcons however had the better scoring opportunities but the Spurs, on the other hand, created a dangerous situation which could have been converted into goals. As a result, the match turned out to be well-contested and the outcome was uncertain.
12’ Munxar went very close to open the score but a header by Vitor Gabriel Soarez Souza was saved with difficulty in two attempts by goalie Joel Xiberras.
16’ The same Soarez Souza had a shot from an ideal position that ended away from St Lawrence’s goal.
21’ The Spurs replied through a free kick by Ayesller Carvalho that was well saved by Munxar’s goalie Joel Micallef.
26’ St Lawrence’s goalie Joel Xiberras was in the right place and made a good intervention to block a header by Soarez Souza following a corner kick by Neil Mifsud.
40’ Munxar’s corner was called to make a difficult save to block a strike from outside the area by Jurgen Mario Portelli.
45+1’ The Falcons could have ended the first half in the lead but a shot from the edge of the area by Matthew Zammit ended over the crossbar.

Second Half
After the break, the match continued to be contested on the same pattern as that of the first half, but Munxar opened the score in their first serious attempt of the second half so that they made sure of the win with a second goal that arrived just before the hour mark.
4’ (0-1) Munxar took the lead when Vitor Gabriel Soarez Souza entered St Lawrence territory and fired in goal as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger.
13’ St Lawrence replied with a shot from outside the area by Dylan Paul Rapa that missed the target.
14’ (0-2) penalty Munxar increased their lead when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Neville Haber on Vitor Gabriel Soarez Souza and the same striker converted his shot from the spot kick.
31’ Munxar were again dangerous but a low shot from outside the area by substitute Samwel Muscat ended wide.
38’ St Lawrence’s last opportunity to reopen he arrived through a shot by substitute Justin Formosa that was well neutralized by goalie Joel Micallef.
39’ The Spurs created another potential scoring opportunity but a header by Jurgen Mario Portelli ended high.
