Gharb Rangers obtained their first win of the season in their match against Munxar Falcons
so they may look forward to a positive start in the second division campaign which will start
in the next weeks. In this match, Munxar were aiming to obtain a win in an attempt to keep their
hopes alive to challenge for a place in the final. However, Munxar were surprised by a
determined opponent who managed to clinch their goal to move away from the bottom of the
table.
The match turned out to be very interesting throughout the first half as each side scored four
goals and the outcome was uncertain during the second period. The main protagonist of the
encounter was Gharb’s striker Andrew Ofulue Chukwuwunke who scored four personal goals.
Timeline:
Gharb seemed heading towards an easy win as they scored three early goals but Munxar
regained composure, re-opened the issue and during the last part of the first half the two sides
scored three goals between them so they took the break in a draw of eight goals.
2’ (0-1) Gharb took the lead with a goal scored by Andrew Ofulue Chukwuwunke who passed
through Munxar’s defence and netted from close distance.
4’ (0-2) Munxar were shocked and conceded the second goal which arrived through a shot from
long distance by Andrew Ofulue Chukwuwunke that ended out of the reach of the
goalkeeper.
6’ (0-3) Gharb added another goal, scored by Carlos Cutajar, who concluded in the net with a
low shot after releasing himself from two opponents inside the area.
30’ (1-3) Munxar reduced the deficit when a cross from the right flank arrived at Luke Meilak
who controlled well and placed in goal with a low shot.
34’ Munxar kept insisting and were dangerous through a low shot by Nathaniel Mercieca that
was well saved by Gharb’s goalie Andre Micallef.
35’ (2-3) penalty Munxar were awarded a penalty for a foul by Gharb’s Samuel Sillato on
Andrew Ofulue Chukwuwunke and the same Nigerian striker converted the penalty
spot.
38’ (2-4) Gharb regained the two-goal lead through a header by Andrew Ofulue
Chukwuwunke following a free kick by Michael Tabone.
42’ (3-4) Munxar were not demoralised and reduced the gap to just one goal for the second
time through a free kick from an angled position by Samwel Muscat that surprised Gharb’s
defence and the goalkeeper.
45+1’ (4-4) Munxar managed to level the score through a lob by Neil Mifsud from an angled
position.

Second Half
After the resumption, Munxar tried to maintain the momentum and for some time they managed
to put pressure on Gharb’s defence. However, Munxar were erratic in their finishing and failed
to capitalise from some good chances so Gharb resisted well and surprised their opponents
with a decisive counterbreak mid-way through the second period.
19’ Gharb’s goalie Andre Micallef denied Munxar from turning the result when he saved a
corner with some difficulty an attempt directly from a free kick by Samwel Muscat.
21’ (4-5) Gharb regained the lead when Andrew Ofulue Chukwuwunke entered Munxar’s
territory with personal action and concluded in goal with a low drive as the goalkeeper left his
position in an attempt to block the danger.
45+5’ (crossbar) Munxar went very close to saving the result but a strike by Neil Mifsud ended on
the crossbar.
