St Lawrence Spurs recovered from four consecutive defeats and ended their commitments in
the first phase of the second division Challenge Cup with an impressive 7-0 win over Gharb
Rangers. This was the first win for St Lawrence and with the points obtained they reached the
same Gharb on equal points but both sides ended the round robin at the bottom of the table.
St Lawrence dominated the encounter and paved the way to the large win with a goal scored at
an early stage. Gharb found it difficult to recover and chased their opponents
throughout the encounter. St Lawrence’s striker Ayesller Carvalho ended up the main
protagonist by scoring the last four goals of the match.
Timeline:
St Lawrence took command of play from the first minutes and continued to dominate over the
opponents for the rest of the time so that they made it very difficult for Gharb to produce a
reaction.
9’ (0-1) St Lawrence opened the score with a shot from a good position by Victor John Saliba
after receiving it from Jurgen Mario Portelli.
30’ Gharb had their best opportunity to level the score through a shot by Andrew Ofulue
Chukwuwinke that ended just over the crossbar.
35’ (post) The Spurs could have added another goal when an attempt by Mark Dingli was
partially saved by substitute goalkeeper Etienne Bajada and from the rebound Victor John
Saliba’s shot was stopped by the post.
37’ (0-2) St Lawrence however doubled their lead with a fine shot by Victor John Saliba
following a cross from the right flank by Mark Dingli.

Second Half
Gharb did not manage to recover after the break as St Lawrence maintained their momentum
and continued to produce continuous danger within Gharb’s territory so that they converted their
superiority by scoring five more goals.
3’ (0-3) The Spurs score their third goal through a personal initiative by Mark Dingli who
entered Gharb’s area and netted with a low shot.
10’ (0-4) Gharb’s defence was surprised and failed to clear the ball from the goalmouth
following a low cross from the right flank by Jake Saliba so that Ayesller Carvalho took
advantage and concluded in goal with a tap-in.
19’ (crossbar) The Spurs were again dangerous but a cross-shot from the right flank by Mark
Dingli was stopped by the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten.
20’ (0-5) St Lawrence’s Ayesller Carvalho increased the lead for his side when he netted with
a shot directly from a free kick.
33’ Gharb continued to concede St Lawrence’s play and Mark Dingli could have scored another
goal when he entered Gharb’s area but his low drive aimed towards an open goal ended just
wide.
40’ (0-6) The sixth goal for St Lawrence however arrived with another tap-in by Ayesller Carvalho
who concluded easily with an inviting low cross by Mark Dingli.
42’ (0-7) St Lawrence sealed the win by scoring the seventh goal when Gharb’s goalie cleared
badly from the edge of the area and Ayesller Carvalho took the ball and placed it into an open
goal with a lob from outside the area.
