In the first match from the second round of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first division,
SK Victoria Wanderers earned three precious Points from a close win over neighbours Oratory
Youths. This derby was a clash between two sides who were on equal points before the
encounter and they were both occupying the second place from the bottom of the table. With
this result, the Wanderers reached Ghajnsielem at fourth place and opened some lead over
the other teams who are struggling against the relegation zone.
Victoria’s win was deserved when considering that the crated more dangerous actions on goal
but the outcome remained uncertain as the Oratory kept insisting to save the result until the final
moments. With this win the Wanderers made up for some disappointing results which they
obtained in the last matches of the first round where they compromised the promising start in the
championship, so that they will be looking forward to consolidate their current position on the
table in their next matches against other teams who are aiming to move away from the lower
part of the table. The victory for Victoria matured with a goal that arrived at the half-hour mark
and for the rest of the encounter, the Wanderers maintained their deployment at their defence
and became more dangerous than their opponents with their breaks, particularly from the
flanks.
On the other hand, this was a disappointing performance for the Oratory as they found it extremely
difficult to create danger from their offensive. The Youths shared play for most of the first half
but after the break, their play was sterile despite their efforts to recover the score. Oratory also
ended up conceding space at their defence and risked to end up conceding a defeat with a
larger margin.
Timeline:
The two sides came out intending to take command of play but the two defensive
departments were well organised and prevailed over the respective strikers so that the match
turned to be well-contested in the midfield where each side could have gone to the break in the
lead.
7’ SK Victoria Wanderers produced the first attempt towards a goal that arrived through a shot by
Marcus Vinicius Claudino Ramos but the ball ended on the side of the net.
9’ Oratory replied with an initiative by Rian Almeida Lopes who released Gregory Rocha
Mendes Da Silva, but the latter saw his shot that was saved by goalie Adrian Parnis.
14’ The Youths could have created more danger when Neil Said delivered a cross inside
Victoria’s area from the right flank but the attempt by Gregory Rocha Mendes Da Silva was
blocked by the defence to a corner.
21’ Victoria’s goalie Adrian Parnis was well placed and blocked with some difficulty an attempt
directly from a free kick by Leonardo Bruno Coca.
22’ The Wanderers threatened Oratory’s defence with a strike from outside the area by
Kenneth Mercieca but goalie Angelo Brignoli managed to block the danger.
30’ (1-0) Victoria opened the score when Caique Silvio Souza da Silva passed through
Oratory’s defence with a personal action and placed in goal with a low shot from an angled
position.
43’ (protests for penalty) Oratory protested for a penalty when Gregory Rocha Mendes Da Silva
entered Victoria’s territory with a personal action but ended up on the floor as he entered the area
following a challenge by his direct opponent.
45+2’ Victoria replied with a strike by Junior Conceicao Cabral that was neutralised in two
attempts by goalie Angelo Brignoli.

Second Half
After the break, the two teams maintained the level of play expressed during the first half so that
the outcome of the encounter remained uncertain. Throughout the second half, the Wanderers
created more scoring opportunities but they were erratic in their finishing so Oratory
remained in contention to obtain a point.
3’ Oratory’s Rain Almeida Lopes passed through Victoria’s defence but his attempt from a good
position was blocked with difficulty by goalie Adrian Parnis.
4’ Oratory was again dangerous through a shot by Leonardo Bruno but the ball ended
high.
5’ The Wanderers replied with a shot by Junior Conceicao Cabral that ended just wide.
7’ Victoria could have capitalised better but a header by Kenneth Mercieca from a corner kick by
Luke Fenech missed the target.
18’ Victoria were again dangerous through a lob from close distance by substitute Joseph Saliba
but the ball ended high.
22’ Oratory’s goalie was called to make an important intervention to save an attempt directly
from a free kick by Caique Silvio Souza Da Silva.
24’ The same goalkeeper Angelo Brignoli kept his side in contention with two consecutive
important saves when he deflected to a corner an effort by Junior Conceicao Cabral who was
alone inside the area following a personal initiative and from the resultant corner kick by Luke
Fenech the same goalkeeper denied Victoria’s striker from a tap-in.
35’ (red cards) The two sides ended playing with a player less when Oratory’s Andre Azzopardi
and Victoria’s Joseph Saliba was sent off for a foul and retaliation.
39’ (crossbar) The Wanderers were unlucky when an attempt directly from the corner kick by
Luke Fenech was stopped by the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten.
45’ Oratory had their best opportunity to save the result when substitute Keith Saliba defended
the ball despite the challenge of various defenders but he missed the moment to conclude
towards a goal from an ideal position.
