Ghajnsielem recovered from a long period where they were stuck with ten points on the table and earned three very important points from a 3-1 win over Oratory Youths.  This was a direct clash between the two teams who were occupying the last two places on the table and therefore they both needed a win to re-open their chances to move away from the relegation zone.  With this result, Oratory remains in the last place on the table while Ghajnsielem not only increased their lead over the same Oratory to five points but they are now within a group of other teams who can gain a safer place on the standings.

The win for Ghajnsielem was well deserved as they were more offensive in their play and for most of the time Oratory were forced to trail their opponents.  Ghajnsielem created more scoring opportunities throughout the encounter and practically clinched the win by scoring the two decisive goals during the first part of the second period so that Oratory became demoralised and the Blacks administered their lead with authority during the last part of the match.

Timeline:

Ghajnsielem were very aggressive during the first minutes of play and made up or missed a penalty kick by scoring a goal just before halftime.  However, Ghajnsielem did not manage to take the break in the lead as Oratory had a reaction to Ghajnsielem’s goal and scored an immediate equaliser.

7’ (penalty missed – saved)  Ghajnsielem could have scored an early goal as they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Joshua Buttigieg on Alberto Xuereb but the shot from the penalty spot by Bruno Da Cruz was saved by Oratory’s goalie Angelo Brignoli.

10’ Ghajnsielem were again dangerous through a shot from an angled position by Alberto Xuereb but the ball ended wide.

Oratory came out of their defence as time passed by and started to share more play with their opponents in the midfield.

23’ (protests for penalty) Oratory protested for a penalty, alleging handing, following a cross from the right that was blocked by the defence.

32’ Ghajnsielem’s Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa crossed towards the goalmouth but Bruno Da Cruz hit badly and the goalkeeper saved without difficulty.

36’ Oratory replied with a header by Rafael Conrado Prudente following a cross by Paul Rapa but the goalkeeper saved without any difficulty.

43’ (0-1) Ghajnsielem opened the score when Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa released Bruno Da Cruz who noted some space within the defence and addressed a shot towards Oratory’s goal with the ball getting a deflection before ending in the net.

45’ (1-1) Oratory levelled the score when Leonardo Bruno Coca defended the ball inside Ghajnsielem’s area and surprised the goalkeeper with a low shot.

HT (1-1)

Second Half

Ghajnsielem took territorial supremacy from the first minutes of play of the second period and scored two goals that put the score beyond the reach of their opponents.

3’ (1-2) Ghajnsielem regained the lead when a cross by Wayne Hilli arrived to Godwin Emmanuel, who arrived on the ball before the goalkeeper and headed easily into goal.

12’ Ghajnsielem operated a counter-attack through an initiative by Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa, who entered the area but his low drive was saved to a corner by the goalkeeper.

13’ Ghajnsielem were again dangerous when De Souza Pereira tried to pass to Godwin Emmanuel but defender Anthony Sultana recovered in time and cleared the danger from the goalmouth.

16’ Ghajnsielem’s Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa had a shot from a good position but the ball ended away from goal.

20’ (crossbar) Oratory went very close to level the score when Ghajnsielem’s goalie managed to punch away from the goalmouth a header by Rafael Conrado Prudente following a cross by Neil Said, and in the following action the same Neil Said addressed towards Ghajnsielem’s area but Rafael Conrado Prudente’s deflection bounced on the crossbar and ended high.

22’ (1-3) Oratory were punished for the missed chance as Ghajnsielem increased their lead with a fine shot by Bruno Da Cruz following a counter break.

37’ (crossbar) Oratory’s best opportunity to reduce the deficit arrived through a header by Rafael Conrado Prudente/ Joshua Buttigieg, following a cross by Andre Azzopardi but the ball hit the crossbar and ended high.
