SK Victoria Wanderers bounced back from two consecutive defeats at the start of the championship, securing their first points with a deserved 3-0 win over Għajnsielem. The Wanderers came out strong, showing clear determination, and effectively sealed the victory within the first 30 minutes with three quick goals.  Despite Għajnsielem’s attempts to respond late in the first half, Victoria maintained control, dominating play throughout the second half.

The Wanderers could have increased their lead further, but they were unlucky as a goal was disallowed for offside and the woodwork denied them twice during the second period. Nonetheless, Victoria’s strong performance was enough to ensure a comfortable win.  With this victory, the Wanderers are now level on points with Għajnsielem, who saw their promising start to the season falter with three consecutive losses.

This result highlights the changing momentum in the championship, as both teams seek to gain ground in the competition after mixed fortunes in the early matches. While Victoria showed signs of improvement, Għajnsielem will need to regroup to avoid further slipping in the standings.

Timeline:

The Wanderers took command of play from the very beginning of the encounter and created various scoring opportunities.  Victoria dominated over their opponents throughout the first half hour of pay and opened a comfortable three-goal lead.  However, during the final stages of the first half, Ghajnsielem staged a determined reaction and could have reduced the score on more than one occasion.

1’ The Wanderers should have opened the score in their first action of the encounter as Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa headed towards the far post inside Ghajnsielem’s area but David Garba Emmanuel’s incredible concluded wide with an open goal at his mercy.

3’ (1-0) Victoria took the lead when Luke Fenech delivered the ball in front of Ghajnsielem’s goal from a long-range free kick and defender Hayden Muscat headed badly in an attempt to clear the danger and committed an own goal.

8’ Ghajnsielem continued to suffer Victoria’s play and almost conceded another goal when Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa’s header following a cross from the left flank by Emerson Zammit was weak and the goalkeeper saved in two attempts.

14’ Ghajnsielem’s goalie Luke Buttigieg was well placed and managed to block with some difficulty a low shot from a good position by Sam Harland.

20’ (2-0) The Wanderers doubled their lead when Sam Harland released Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa and the Brazilian striker entered the area and netted with a low drive as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to block the danger.

26’ (3-0) penalty Victoria was awarded a penalty for a foul by Ghajnsielem’s Diver Duvan Torres Quinones on David Garba Emmanuel and Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa netted with a low shot from the penalty spot.

38’ Ghajnsielem had their first attempt of the first half towards Victoria’s goal that arrived through a shot from outside the area by Damon Hili but the ball ended high.

40’ The Blacks tried to regain some confidence and once again threatened Victoria’s rearguard through a shot from outside the area by Ismael Belhadj but once again the ball ended over the crossbar.

45+1’ Ghajnsielem’s last opportunity to reduce the score before the break arrived through a shot by Mark Anthony Scicluna but the ball ended away from goal.

HT (3-0)

Second Half

Ghajnsielem tried to maintain their momentum after the resumption but the Wanderers re-organised themselves and kept the danger away from their area.  Victoria regained some territorial supremacy but failed to capitalise on some good scoring opportunities so the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.

7’ (crossbar) The Wanderers went very close to adding another goal but a free kick from a long distance by Matthias Cordina was saved by Ghajnsielem’s goalie Luke Buttigieg with the aid of the crossbar.

16’ (goal disallowed) Victoria netted the ball in Ghajnsielem’s goal for the fourth time when David Garba Emmanuel addressed towards goal from a free kick by Matthias Cordina and Neil Camilleri pushed the ball in the net but the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement.

19’ (post) Victoria’s David Garba Emmanuel went very close to adding another goal for his side but his strike from outside the area was stopped by the post with the goalkeeper beaten.

24’ (penalty James Tabone hands???)

27’ The Wanderers were again dangerous through an attempt directly from a free kick by Matthias Cordina but the ball ended high.

35’ (protests for penalty) Ghajnsielem protested for a penalty when Joseph Onyeka Ezigbo ended up on the floor inside Victoria’s area as he tried to pass his direct opponent.

38’ (protests for penalty) The Citizens also protested for a penalty when David Garba Emmanuel ended up on the floor inside Ghajnsielem’s area he tried to pass with a personal on, but the striker was shown a yellow card for simulation.

44’ Ghajnsielem’s goalie Luke Buttigieg denied the Wanderers from scoring a fourth goal when he managed to block consecutive attempts by David Garba Emmanuel.
