SK Victoria Wanderers earned the full points at stake from their derby match against Oratory Youths so that they continued to recover from an unconvincing start in the campaign, while the Youths conceded their fourth defeat in a row and remained at the bottom of the table without a point.

Oratory came out for this match determined to obtain a positive result and managed to open the score at an early stage but the Wanderers had a good reaction by pushing more players forward and became much more dangerous than their opponents.  Victoria took the break with a one-goal lead and after the resumption, they protected their territory to defend their lead so that Oratory’s efforts became sterile and they failed to create serious opportunities to recover the deficit.  Based on the performance of this match the two sides showed some weaknesses in the respective defensive departments.  In terms of offensive play Oratory’s strikers struggle more to produce danger while Victoria gives the impression that they have room for improvement in terms of finishing as they often fail to capitalise on potential scoring opportunities.

Timeline:

Oratory seemed more aggressive during the opening minutes of play and also managed to put their heads in front but the Wanderers were not demoralised and as time passed by they recovered from the difficult moment and took command of play.  SK Victoria Wanderers produced more dangerous action and scored on two occasions to end the first half in the lead.

4’ (1-0) Oratory took the lead when Victoria’s defence was surprised following a corner kick by Rian Almeida Lopes but the attempt by Adam Refalo hit the crossbar.  From the resultant melee Sean Attard’s attempt was blocked by the defence but Matheus Vinicius Do Prado took advantage and fired in goal from close distance.

12’ The Wanderers replied with a strike from outside the area by Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa that got a deflection and the ball ended in a corner.

13’ (1-1) From the resultant corner action the Wanderers levelled the score, Luke Fenech delivered the ball towards the goalmouth and Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa headed easily in the net.

28’ (red card) Victoria Wanderers had their coach Mark Buttigieg who was sent off from the bench after receiving a second yellow card from the referee.

28’ The Wanderers missed an open scoring opportunity when David Garba Emmanuel was released inside Oratory’s area following a break by Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa but Emmanuel had his close ranged shot that was partially saved by goalie Angelo Brignoli and Matheus Vinicius Do Prado avoided a certain goal when the cleared the ball off the fatal line.

39’ (1-2) SK Victoria Wanderers managed to turn the result in their favour following a prolonged corner action as Matthias Cordina delivered the ball from his corner kick but the attempt by David  Garba Emmanuel was blocked on the fatal line among protests for handling and from the resultant short clearance, Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa had his header blocked by goalie Angelo Brignoli and from the rebound, David Garba Emmanuel fired in goal from close distance.

45+2’ Oratory missed an opportunity to score the equaliser when Rian Almeida Lopes delivered a low cross towards Victoria’s goalmouth but Adam Refalo failed to connect and the ball ended wide.

HT (1-2)

Second Half

After the resumption, the Oratory tried to increase their efforts in an attempt to recover the score while the Wanderers were more prudent and tried to administer their lead.  The Wanderers found it difficult to threaten Oratory’s rearguard in their breaks so serious actions on goal were rare and the outcome of the encounter remained uncertain.

25’ The Wanderers could have created more danger when David Garba Emmanuel delivered the ball inside Oratory’s area from a throw-in but the header by Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa was neutralised without difficulty by goalie Angelo Brignoli.

45+3’ Victoria’s Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa tried to surprise Oratory’s keeper when he was out of position but his lob from long distance was weak and goalie Angelo Brignoli saved without difficulty.
