Oratory Youths obtained their first win of the season in their match from the Preliminary Round of the BOV GFA Cup against second-division side Gharb Rangers so that they made up for their difficult start in the championship, where they are still without a point after five matches.

In this match, Oratory was determined to obtain the win to boost their confidence for their next commitments in this competition and in the campaign.  They had a prudent approach and made sure to deploy a strong defensive scheme to deny their opponents from creating danger.  Oratory managed to keep their area clear from danger and maintained a strong shape so that they held supremacy through the ninety minutes.  They scored an early goal and took the driving seat and made sure of the win with a second goal that arrived minutes away from the end of regular time.

Timeline:

Gharb surprised their opponents during the first minutes of play and seemed determined to put pressure on Oratory’s rearguard but the latter resisted well to the initial difficulty and opened the score in their first approach towards Gharb’s goal.  Oratory kept insisting and enjoyed territorial supremacy but they found it very difficult to conclude their play into attempts towards goal.  Gharb regained some confidence and threatened Oratory’s rear guard with potential scoring opportunities near the end of the first half.

13’ (0-1) Oratory took the lead when Gharb’s goalie failed to hold a cross by Rian Almeida Lopes from the right flank and Vitor Gabriel Soarez Souza took advantage and concluded in goal from close distance.

43’ Gharb were dangerous through an effort by Jonathan Paul Portelli but Oratory’s keeper Jonathan Vella was well placed and saved the danger.

44’ The Rangers could have capitalised better but an attempt from a free kick by Anthony Sultana missed the target.

Second Half

Oratory regained command of play from the early stages of the second period but Gharb’s defensive deployment continued to protect their area with the result that the qualification remained uncertain until the Youths scored their second goal with just ten minutes left for the end of regular time.

7’ (protests for penalty) Oratory protested for a penalty alleging handling by Gharb’s defence following a shot by Matheus Vinicius Do Prado.

7’ Oratory was again dangerous but a shot from an ideal position by Vitor Gabriel Soarez Souza ended away from goal.

17’ Oratory’s Vitor Gabriel Soarez Souza almost surprised Gharb’s defence when he took a back pass inside the area but the Brazilian striker was within the area when a goal kick was taken and play resumed with a retake of the goal kick.

26’ The Youths once again threatened Gharb’s defence with a shot from outside the area by Maths Vinicius Do Prado but the ball ended wide.

32’ (crossbar) Oratory went very close to doubling their lead but a shot from a free kick by Matheus Vinicius Do Prado hit the crossbar.

36’ (0-2) Oratory managed to put their minds at rest from the qualification by scoring the second goal that arrived through a curling shot towards the far post by Rian Almeida Lopes.

45+4’ (crossbar)  The Youths could have scored a third goal but Rian Almeida Lopes’s attempt following a personal initiative was stopped by the crossbar.
