First-division side SK Victoria Wanderers as expected earned qualification to the quarter-finals stage of the BOV GFA Cup with a 4-0 win over second-division side Zebbug Rovers.

In this match, SK Victoria Wanderers imposed their superiority and clinched the win with two goals scored in each half.  Zebbug tried to make it difficult for their more quoted opponents and during more than half an hour of play they denied the Citizens from creating danger within their territory.  In the meantime, the Rovers tried to produce some sporadic breaks but Victoria’s goalie was never called to make any difficult interventions.  The Wanderers paved the way to the win by scoring two goals before halftime in the space of three minutes so they continued to administer play after the break and made sure of the qualification by scoring two more goals.

Timeline:

Zebbug came out for this match with the motivation to surprise Victoria and during the opening minutes of the encounter, they were well deployed at their defence so the Wanderers found it more difficult than expected to take command of play. The Citizens increased their momentum as time passed by and were relieved of the pressure a few minutes after the half-hour mark when they managed to break the deadlock.

28’ The first serious attempt towards goal of the match arrived from Victoria’s striker Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa but his shot from a good position was weak and Zebbug’s goalie Gabriel Saliba neutralised the danger.

29’ The Wanderers could have capitalised better but an effort from a good position by Vasile-Fernando Mihai missed the target.

35’ Zebbug’s goalie Gabriel Saliba was well placed and blocked with some difficulty a close-ranged shot by Igor Henrique Da Silva Costa.

36’ (1-0) SK Victoria Wanderers opened the score when Zebbug’s defence cleared badly the ball following a corner kick and Vasile-Fernando Mihai fired in goal from a good position.

39’ (2-0) The Wanderers doubled their lead through a fine strike from outside the area by Sam Harland that surprised Zebbug’s keeper.

42’ Victoria could have added another goal but a header from close distance by Neil Camilleri following a cross by Vasile-Fernando Mihai ended high.

44’ Zebbug had their best opportunity of the first half to score through a shot by Luke Portelli but the ball ended away from goal.

Second Half

After the resumption, the Wanderers reduced their pressure while Zebbug continued to find it very difficult to produce a reaction so that the qualification issue was never in contention.

14’ (3-0) Victoria put their minds at rest from a win by scoring the third goal that arrived through a fine low shot from outside the area by Vasile-Fernando Mihai that ended out of the reach of Zebbug’s goalie.

17’ (penalty missed – crossbar) Zebbug had a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Alexandre Galiano Lazzarini on Nathan Cini but the shot from the penalty spot by Andrew Ofulue Chukwuwinke was stopped by the crossbar.  The same Chukwuwinke headed in the net from the rebound but the goal was disallowed since the penalty taker cannot hit the ball twice.

23’ (4-0) penalty SK Victoria Wanderers were also awarded a penalty following an irregular tackle inside Zebbug’s area by defender Matthion Formosa on Victoria’s substitute Melchior Gafa and on this occasion, Victoria’s Vasile-Fernando Mihai converted from the penalty spot to mark a personal hat-trick and made the score 4-0.

32’ Zebbug’s goalie Gabriel Saliba denied the Citizens from scoring a fifth goal when he managed to block to a corner a low shot by Sam Harland who was alone inside the area.
