Zebbug Rovers registered their first win in the campaign when they defeated Munxar Falcons by just one goal in the opening stages of the second period. This was another clash between two sides who were aiming for a win for different reasons as Munxar were aiming to take advantage of the defeat conceded by St Lawrence Spurs on the same Match-Day, while Zebbug needed the points to move away from the bottom of the table.
Zebbug produced their best performance so far this season and the win over Munxar was well deserved. Munxar on the other hand disappointed as they never managed to express superiority over their opponents which reflects the position of the two sides on the table. Munxar also missed an opportunity to earn at least a point from this match when they failed to convert a penalty kick during the second period.
Timeline:
Munxar seemed more aggressive during the opening minutes of play but they failed to convert two potential scoring opportunities so they allowed their opponents to settle down and started to share more play in the midfield. As time passed by the Rovers produced better play but the actions on goal were rare and the two sides took the break on a goalless draw.
4’ Munxar had their first shot towards goal through Nathaniel Mercieca but Zebbug’s goalie was well-placed and saved the danger.
7’ Munxar’s Nathaniel Mercieca had a curling shot following a personal action but the ball ended wide.
24’ The Falcons once again threatened Zebbug’s defence with a shot from a free kick by Joseph George Vella that was saved in two attempts by goalie Gabriel Saliba.
26’ Zebbug replied with an attempt by Marco Ciangura that ended high.

Second Half
Zebbug maintained their momentum after the break and managed to take the lead at an early stage of the second period so that the match became more interesting as Munxar tried to increase their efforts in an attempt to level the score. Munxar also missed a chance to score an equaliser from a penalty so Zebbug gained more confidence and the latter continued to be quite dangerous in their breaks.
3’ (1-0) Zebbug Rovers opened the score with a goal that arrived through a strike from outside the area by Marco Ciangura that ended in the upper corner of the net.
18’ (penalty missed – wide) Munxar had a golden opportunity to level the score when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Anthony Abela on Daniel Mesa Pineros, but the shot from the penalty spot by Joseph George Vella ended wide.
32’ Zebbug went very close to seal the win but consecutive shots from the two sides’ goal, by Paul Spiteri and Nathan John Cini, were both blocked with difficulty by goalie Joel Micallef and finally the shot by Oliver Cremona missed the target.
