SK Victoria Wanderers registered a 4-0 win over St Lawrence Spurs in their fourth match of the 2nd Division Challenge Cup and confirmed their ambitions to be among the main protagonists in the competitions for the lower category.  The Wanderers were already sure of the qualification to the final of this competition with the results of the matches from Match Day-3, but in this match they were still determined to obtain the win.

St Lawrence Spurs were aiming to obtain a positive result from this encounter but turning point arrived mid-way through the first when the Spurs missed an opportunity to open the score from a penalty kick and minutes later the Wanderers took the lead.  The Citizens kept insisting and practically they put their minds at rest from the win before the end of the first half.

Timeline:

Play was quite balanced during the opening stages but the Wanderers dominated during the second part of the period and paved the way to the win by scoring three goals.

2’ (post) SK Victoria Wanderers could have scored an early goal but a low curling shot by Joseph George Vella after receiving from Aud-Gustine James Obaje was topped by the post with the goalkeeper beaten.

11’ The Spurs missed a good scoring opportunity but the shot from a good position by Denis Di Maio, following a cross from the right flank, missed the target.

17’ (penalty missed – saved) St Lawrence were awarded a penalty when Mark Dingli ended on the floor inside the area following a challenge with Victoria’s two central defenders.  However, the shot from the 11 metres by Denis Di Maio was weak and saved easily by goalie Omar Xuereb.

23’ (0-1) The Spurs were punished for the missed scoring opportunity as the Wanderers opened the score when Sam Harland delivered a cross from the right flank, Aud-Gustine James Obaje headed inside the area and Joseph George Vella concluded in goal with a low shot.

25’ (0-2) penalty SK Victoria Wanderers doubled their lead from a penalty, awarded for a foul by Neville Haber on Aud-Gustine James Obaje and the same striker converted from the spot kick.

27’ In another dangerous action by the Citizens, a shot by Owen Fenech ended wide.

30’ (0-3) The Wanderers added another goal when Owen Fenech entered St Lawrence’s area from the left flank and from his low cross Aud-Gustine James Obaje netted with a shot on the run.

40’ St Lawrence’s central defender Daniel Micallef denied Victoria from scoring a fourth goal when he cleared off the fatal line a header by Owen Fenech following a cross by Sam Harland.

HT (0-3)

Second Half

The match lost much of the interest after the break as the Spurs failed to produce a reaction while Victoria reduced their momentum of offensive play so that the actions at goal during the second period were rare.

22’ (0-4) The Wanderers scored their fourth goal that arrived through a fine shot by Owen Fenech following a personal action.

35’ The Spurs went closet to score a consolation goal when substitute Victor John Saliba took the ball from Victoria’s defence, entered the area and turned around the goalkeeper but defender Adam Refalo, who came in as a substitute, recovered in time an d denied the striker from depositing the ball into an open goal.
