In the first match from Match Day-4 of the BOV Gozo Football League of the first Division, Oratory Youths registered the biggest surprise so far in the championship by defeating the more quoted Ghajnsielem with a 2-0 score.  This was an important match for the two sides as they were both coming from disappointing defeats in their respective previous match.  Oratory were also without a point as they conceded three defeats in the first three matches of the championship.  With this result the Youths moved their position on the table while Ghajnsielem may have compromised their ambitions to be serious challengers for the main honour.

Ghajnsielem were favourites to win this match and held territorial supremacy for long stretches, but they failed to capitalise from their best scoring opportunities so that they kept their opponents in contention.   Oratory were rewarded for their prudent approach.  They were well deployed at their defence and created danger whenever they operated counter breaks.  Oratory’s win matured through two goals scored during a crucial phase of the match in the second period.  The protagonists in Oratory’s win were undoubtedly their Brazilian striker Haraan Hajazan Goncalves Barbosa who scored a brace and goalie Angelo Brignoli who made two decisive saves that denied their opponents from taking the lead.

Timeline:

During the first period play was rather balanced as the two teams came out with the intention to take the lead.  Ghajnsielem seemed surprised with Oratory’s deployment, as the latter protected their area and operated dangerous breaks.  However, Ghajnsielem imposed their superiority during the last part of the first half and created some good attempts towards goal.

16’ Oratory Youths could have opened the score when Goncalves Barbosa entered Ghajnsielem’s area with a personal action, turned around his direct opponent but his low shot was well saved by goalie Adrian Parnis.

27’ Ghajnsielem replied with a strike by Naim Ibrahim Belhadj following a clearance by Oratory’s defence that ended just wide.

33’ The Blacks were again dangerous when an initiative by Joao Pedro Oliviera Santos was blocked by the defence but from the rebound the first timer by Naim Ibrahim Belhadj ended just wide.

34’ Oratory’s keeper Angelo Brignoli was well placed and neutralised without difficulty a strike by Joao Pedro Oliviera Santos.

38’ The same goalkeeper denied Ghajnsielem from scoring with a difficult save following an overhead kick by Patrick Dos Santos Cruz after receiving inside the area from Alberto Xuereb.

Second Half

The Blacks maintained their momentum after the break and increased their efforts in an attempt to pass through Oratory’s organised defence.  Ghajnsielem were erratic in their finishing and ended up conceding two goals following counter breaks that decided the issue.

9’ Oratory’s goalie Angelo Brignoli was called to make a good save following a strike by Claudio Henrique Da Silva Barbosa.

12’ Ghajnsielem could have capitalised better but a shot by Alberto Xuereb from a good position following a melee inside Oratory’s area ended wide.

20’ Oratory’s goalie Angelo Brignoli made a difficult intervention to neutralise a lob from close distance by Patrick Dis Santos Cruz who was released inside the area in a dubious offside position by Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos.

24’ (1-0) Ghajnsielem were punished for the missed chance as Oratory broke the deadlock when Sunday Uforma Ubwere produced a counter break on the right flank and from his low cross Haraan Hajazan Goncalves Barbosa arrived before the goalkeeper and placed the ball into an open goal.

34’ (2-0) Oratory once again surprised their opponents when Haraan Hajazan Goncalves Barbosa entered Ghajnsielem’s territory with a counter break and placed in goal as substitute goalkeeper Matthew Muscat left his position in an attempt to block the danger.

40’ Ghajnsielem could have re-opened the issue but a shot on the run by substitute Chris Camilleri after receiving from Patrick Dos Santos Cruz ended wide.

45+3’ (post) Oratory could have sealed the win with another goal but a curling shot by Sunday Uforma Ubwere following a personal action was stopped by the post with the goalkeeper beaten.
