Qala Saints registered their third win in the campaign with a goal scored in each half in their match against Sannat Lions. Qala therefore recovered from a series of negative results, including the defeat in the final of the Knock Out competition for the category, and earned the points that needed to leave the bottom of the table at the expense of Zebbug Rovers. On the other hand this was Sannat’s fifth consecutive defeat and continued to produce disappointing performances despite the fact that for most of the season they were considered as serious challengers for promotion.
During the opening stages of the match Sannat seemed in a better shape. They dictated matters and held territorial supremacy. Sannat however found it very difficult to convert their play into good scoring opportunities. The closest that Sannat went to scoring during their best patch of play was on 18 minutes but a free kick by Sunday Baala was neutralised by goalie Franco Buttigieg. Qala replied two minutes later but a shot by Christian Portelli following a good move by Dario Zamora inside Sannat’s area. Qala opened the score on 33 minutes through a header by John Rapa following a free kick from long distance by Brian Meilak.
Qala continued to administer play but during the first minutes of the second half Sannat tried to increase their efforts in an attempt to recover the score. On 47 minutes a shot by Sannat’s Ajibade Adesina from an angled position almost surprised goalie Franco Buttigieg but the latter managed to save the danger in two attempts. Qala regained superiority as time passed by and on 57 minutes a free kick by Brian Meilak was well saved by Sannat’s goalie Angelo Brignoli and on 66 minutes the same goalkeeper was well placed to save in time a close ranged shot by Qala’s Luke Meilak following an action by Dario Zamora. On 69 minutes Qala’s Dario Zamora was floored in the area by Sannat’s David Udo Monday, the referee awarded a penalty and the same Argentine striker converted from the spot kick. Sannat could have reduced the score on 78 minutes but a shot by Sunday Baala ended wide. One minute later a shot from outside the area by Qala’s Joseph Buttigieg was saved by Sannat’s goalie and on 83 minutes Qala’s substitute William Cassar had an attempt that ended high. On 85 minutes Sannat were again dangerous but a shot by Ajibade Adesina following a prolonged action inside Qala’s area was cleared form the goalmouth by Dario Zamora with the goalkeeper beaten. Sannat had another opportunity to re-open the issue three minutes later, but Daniel Borg’s shot from a good position was deflected to a corner by Qala’s defence. Qala could have scored a thiord goal in the first minute of stoppage time but a good shot by Malcolm Cefai was saved in two attempts by goalie Angelo Brignoli. In the fourth minute of stoppage time Qala’s goalie Franco Buttigieg made two consecutive interventions following close ranged shots by substitute Joseph Zammit and Ajibade Adesina to deny Sannat from scoring a late consolation goal.
