Qala Saints were held to a draw of two goals by Ghajnsielem so the Maroons missed an opportunity to consolidate their leadership on the table.  On the other hand, Ghajnsielem were rewarded for their efforts and confirmed the positive performance expressed in their previous match although they will probably miss a place in the championship pool in the second phase of the championship.

For this match Qala had Joao Vitor Ferrari Silva missing due to injury while Ghajnsielem had Pedro Augusto Mota De Lima who was making his debut in Gozitan football. Qala was often surprised by Ghajnsielem’s play and never managed to take control of the encounter.  The Maroons, who were favourites to obtain a win, found themselves trailing by one goal after a few minutes of play and struggled to score the equaliser before the break.  Qala compromised their possibility to dominate the second period as they were reduced to ten players before the hour mark and Ghajnsielem gained the confidence to defend the result and threatened the challengers for the title to win the encounter.  During the final stages, Qala’s reaction was confused and they found it very difficult to create serious scoring opportunities so that the score remained unchanged.

Timeline:

Ghajnsielem surprised their opponents during the opening stages and scored an early goal so that for the rest of the first half Qala found it difficult to produce a reaction and continued to suffer Ghajnsielem’s offensive play.

6’ Qala’s goalie Owen Attard was called to make an important intervention to turn to a corner a header by Ghajnsielem’s Patrick Dos Santos Cruz following a cross from the right flank by Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos.

8’ The Maroons replied with an effort by Shaun Attard that was saved without difficulty by goalie Adrian Parnis.

9’ (1-0) penalty Ghajnsielem were awarded a penalty for a foul by Emanuel Buttigieg on Patrick Dos Santos Cruz and the same Brazilian striker converted from the spot kick.

15’ Qala’s Ayesller Carvalho had an attempt directly from a free kick that ended high.

21’ Ghajnsielem’s goalie Adrian Parnis was well-placed and blocked a good shot by Rafael Conrado Prudente.

29’ The Blacks once again threatened Qala’s defence when Patrick Dos Santos Cruz entered Qala’s area but his attempt was well saved by goalie Owen Attard.

37’ Qala could have capitalised better when Jordi Parnis released Martin Buttigieg inside Ghajnsielem’s area but the latter saw his shot that ended on the side of the net.

40’ The Maroons missed another good scoring opportunity when Rafael Conrado Prudente entered Ghajnsielem’s area but the striker hit badly from a good position and the ball ended away from goal.

41’ Qala kept insisting and a shot from a good position by Ayesller Carvalho ended wide.

44’ (1-1) Qala was rewarded for their efforts and levelled the score when Ayesller Carvalho released Julian Yoiti Suzuki Bicudo who entered the area and his drive ended in goal despite the attempt of the goalkeeper to block the danger.

Second Half

The match became much more contested after the second period as the two sides were aiming to take the lead.  Ghajnsielem also gained more confidence when Qala was reduced to ten players after a few minutes of play into the second period so the outcome of the encounter remain uncertain.

1’ Qala’s goalie Owen Attard was well placed and partially saved an effort by Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos and from the rebound, Patrick Dos Santos Cruz concluded wide from a close distance.

3’ The Maroons replied through a personal initiative by Suzuki Bicudo but Ghajnsielem’s goalie Adrian Parnis was well placed and neutralised the danger.

9’ Qala could have capitalised better when Ghajnsielem’s defence was surprised following a corner kick by Ayesller Carvalho and goalie Adrian Parnis managed to save the effort by Rafael Conrado Prudente with the aid of the crossbar in more than one attempt.

9’ (red card) At the end of the action Qala ended up playing with a player less as skipper Emanuel Buttigieg was shown a second yellow card for pushing goalie Adrian Parnis.

11’ (protests for penalty) Ghajnsielem protests for a penalty when Qala’s goalie Owen Attard cleared the ball before Pedro Augusto Mota De Lima could hit towards the goal.

13’ The Blacks were again dangerous through a header by Kurt Bajada following a free kick by Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos.

24’ (protests for penalty) Qala protested for a penalty when Shaun Attard ended up on the floor inside Ghajnsielem’s area when he tried to pass his direct opponent but the referee did not notice any infringement and ended up showing a yellow card to the same striker.

26’ Ghajnsielem’s goalie Adrian Parnis denied Qala from taking the lead when he blocked a corner attempt by Suzuki Bicudo after receiving from Ayesller Carvalho.

37’ Ghajnsielem went very close to regain the lead but a header by Daniel Farrugia following a free kick by Joao Pedro Oliveira Santos ended just wide.

41’ Qala were also dangerous when Jordi Parnis entered Ghajnsielem’s area but his close ranged shot was blocked by goalie Adrian Parnis.

44’ Qala’s goalie Owen Attard had good timing and saved the result for his side as he left his position in time and took the ball before Patrick Dos Santos Cruz could conclude towards the goal.
