Saqnnat Lions had a positive start in the campaign as they earned the full points at stake from their match against Qala Saints. The six teams forming the BOV Gozo Football league of the second division are all expected to produce an interesting championship and therefore there are no hot favourites to win the promotion this season. The match between Sannat Lions and Qala Saints confirmed these expectations as the final score remained in contention until the dying moments of the encounter. Sannat managed to capitalize from the scoring opportunities and ended up obtaining a deserved win.
Qala had a better start and were unlucky on 7 minutes when a strike from outside the area by Daniel Portelli hit the post. The Saints continued to enjoy territorial supremacy during the intiatial stages on the match and on 15 minutes they were again dangerous through a shot from outside the area by Joseph Buttigieg. Sannat recovered from the difficult start and as time passed by they started to produce the better play. On 20 minutes Sannat’s Joseph Zammit entered Qala’s territory but failed to conclude towards goal from an ideal position. Sannat opened the score seven minutes later through a low drive by Antoine Camilleri following a low cross by Joseph Zammit from the left flank. Sannat continued to dictate matters and in the first minute of stoppage time before half time they could have doubled the score but Jospeh Zammit concluded over the crossbar from a good position after receiving in the area from Antoine Camilleri.
Sannat tried to maintain their pressure on their opponents after the break but they failed to create dangerous actions on Qala’s goal. Qala on the other hand operated with counter breaks and on 55 minutes they went very close to level the score when Alan Marley Mukom Fotso took the ball at the edge of the area following some hesitation at Sannat’s rear guard but his attempt was well blocked by goalie Owen Attard. The Saints were again close to scoring on 71 minutes through a low shot by Michael Mumford, following a personal action from the left flank, that ended on the side of the net. The match became much more interesting during eh final stages as Sannat tried to increase their lead while Qala increased their efforts in an attempt to save the result. Sannat’s Antoine Camilleri could have added another goal for his side on two separate occasions but his attempts missed the target. Sannat however managed to seal the victory on 89 minutes through a low shot from close distance by Oliver Farrugia after receiving from substitute Isaac Mampalao.
