Gharb Rangers recovered from a two-goal deficit with a stoppage-time goal in a match from the last Match-Day of the first round of the Second Division against St Lawrence Spurs. The point earned was enough for them to move alone at the top of the standings, taking full advantage of Sannat Lions’ defeat in their last match of the round.

This match was a direct clash for first place: St Lawrence had the opportunity to join Gharb and Sannat on level points, while Gharb needed a positive result to secure top spot on their own. St Lawrence appeared on course to reach their target as they established a deserved two-goal lead, but Gharb increased their efforts in the late stages and scored twice to rescue a draw. With this result, Gharb remain the only undefeated team in the category.

Timeline

First Half:

St Lawrence dominated territorially for most of the first half and went into the break with a two-goal advantage. Gharb looked unsettled, struggled to protect their goal, and created very little danger at the other end.

11’ (0–1) St Lawrence opened the scoring when Felipe Augusto played through Gabriel Debrincat, who beat the goalkeeper with a shot from a tight angle.

14’ St Lawrence threatened again through a well-struck free kick by Felipe Augusto, which went just wide.

20’ Gharb responded with a good effort by Wesley Barnaske, but St Lawrence goalkeeper Joel Micallef saved.

42’ St Lawrence could have created further danger, but a central shot by Charlon Farrugia missed the target.

45+1’ (0–2) St Lawrence doubled the score when Gabriel Debrincat set up Felipe Augusto, who advanced and finished low past the goalkeeper.

HT (0–2)

Second Half:

In the second half, St Lawrence managed their lead and missed chances to put the match to bed. As time passed, Gharb pushed forward with determination and eventually earned the point they were seeking.

2’ Gharb threatened with a shot by Wesley Barnaske from a good position, but it went wide.

3’ (post) St Lawrence replied immediately when a close-range effort by Felipe Augusto, following a cross from the right, struck the post.

16’ St Lawrence missed another chance when Daniel Atzori failed to hit the target from a promising position.

23’ (1–2) Gharb reduced the deficit when substitute Damian Depasquale headed into the net from a corner delivered by Damon Hili.

30’ Gharb kept pressing, and a powerful shot by Depasquale went over.

35’ (goal disallowed) St Lawrence thought they had restored their two-goal lead when substitute Damian Jude Xerri scored, but it was ruled out for offside.

44’ (post) Gharb went close again when a shot by Damon Hili skimmed the post.

45+2’ (2–2) Gharb salvaged the result when Damon Hili sent in a cross from the right that cut through the defence, allowing Wesley Barnaske to head home from close range.
