Munxar Falcons scored two late goals in their final league match against Zebbug Rovers to turn a deficit into a 2–1 victory, and with the points earned they avoided finishing the championship at the bottom of the table.

Zebbug entered the match as favourites to claim all three points, as a win would have allowed them a possibility to finish the league at  the third place, while Munxar appeared demoralised and resigned to ending a disappointing campaign at the foot of the standings. As expected, Zebbug made the brighter start but failed to consolidate their advantage. In the second half, Munxar became more adventurous and their efforts were rewarded as they managed to turn the match around and secure the win and to end the season on a positive note.

Timeline

First Half:

Zebbug pushed forward from the outset, but in the opening minutes found it difficult to break down the opposing defence. Munxar remained well organised for much of the half and, after conceding the opening goal, attempted to respond, making the contest more interesting.

10’ Munxar registered their first serious attempt on goal through a shot by Luke Meilak, which went wide.

27’ (1–0) Zebbug opened the scoring when Jake Sacco played the ball through to Bernard Camilleri, who advanced and beat the goalkeeper from a good position.

32’ Munxar could have made better use of an opportunity, but Joey Grech’s shot missed the target.

HT (1-0)

Second Half:

Zebbug attempted to control the game after the break in order to protect their lead, but in the latter stages Munxar became more aggressive and successfully turned the result in their favour.

30’ Zebbug goalkeeper Francesco Portelli was called into action to save a close-range effort by Joey Grech.

40’ (1–1) Munxar equalised when Ayesller Carvalho struck from an angled position, beating the goalkeeper.

42’ Zebbug almost regained the lead, but a shot by Haraan Goncalves Barbosa was saved by Munxar goalkeeper Aiden Debono.

45’ (1–2) Munxar scored the decisive goal when Joey Grech’s shot was partially saved by the Zebbug goalkeeper, allowing Ayesller Carvalho to slot home from close range.
