In the first match from the second round of the MFA The FA Trophy played at the Gozo Stadium, Munxar Falcons, who are currently occupying the bottom place on the table of the lower division in Gozitan football, were defeated with a large score by Gharghur who play in the MFA First Division category.  As expected Gharghur dominated the match throughout the ninety minutes and put their minds at rest of the qualification at a very early stage of the encounter.  The visitors scored six goals during the first half and administered play for the rest of the encounter.  Despite the evident difference between the two sides Munxar’s young players tried hard to keep a respectable score and tried to at least score a consolation goal particularly during the second period.

Gharghur went close to open the score on 7 minutes but an effort by Gordon Saliba was stopped by the post.  On 11 minutes Gharghur’s striker Julio Cesar Sousa Martins Da Silva produced a good personal action inside Munxar’s area but the final shot ended just wide.  Julio Cesar Sousa Martins Da Silva opened the score on 14 minutes when his shot after receiving from a cross by Lyden Vella ended out of the reach of Munxar’s keeper.  One minute later Gharghur’s Gordon Saliba had another attempt that was stopped by the crossbar and on 22 minutes the visitors doubled the score when a cross by player-coach William Barbosa arrived to Julio Cesar Sousa Martins Da Silva who concluded in goal, despite the attempt by Francesco Cini to clear the ball from the fatal line. One minute later a good shot by Eduardo De Lima Nikolau was saved by goalie Damien Spiteri and two minutes later Munxar managed to avoid another goal when a clearance by the defence hit defender Paul Parnis, the ball hit the crossbar and goalie Damien Spiteri managed to clear the danger before one of Gharghur’s strikers could push the ball into an open goal.  However, Gharghur scored their third goal on 31 minutes through a low drive by Carlo Gie following a pass inside the area by Karl Conti.  Three minutes later Munxar’s goalie Damien Spiteri made a good save following a shot by Luke Busuttil.  The same Busuttil produced a good move from the right flank on 35 minutes and from his pass Gordon Saliba had his shot on the run stopped by the crossbar and from the rebound Julio Cesar Sousa Martins Da Silva placed easily into an open goal.  Three minutes later Carlo Gie made it 5-0 with a low shot from close distance and one minute later Munxar operated a counter break but Elijah Xuereb had a good shot that ended wide.  On 41 minutes Gharghur’s Luke Busuttil concluded over the crossbar after receiving an inviting pass by Eduardo De Lima Nikolau but on 42 minutes Luke Busuttil scored the sixth goal for his side with a fine strike following a personal action from the right flank.

During the opening minutes of the second period Gharghur continued to produce pressure on Munxar’s rear guard and on 52 minutes player-coach William Barbosa added another goal with a low shot following a personal action.  Two minutes later Munxar’s goalie Damien Spiteri saved with difficulty a good attempt by Carlo Gie and on 58 minutes Gharghur scored their eighth goal through a well prepared set-piece, where William Barbosa passed from a free kick to Carlo Gie at the edge of the area and the latter unmarked Eduardo De Lima Nikolau who placed in goal with an own goal.  As Gharghur reduced their pressure Munxar managed to produce some actions aimed at Gharghur’s goal.  On 31 minutes a shot from long distance by Paul Said ended not far away from Gharghur’s goal and on 41 minutes the same Said operated a counter break and from his pass Jordi Parnis concluded high from a good position.  Until the end of the encounter Gharghur remained in control of play and had other attempt mainly through shot from long distance that ended wide so that the final score remained unchanged.

Referee: Sandro Spiteri
