Victoria Hotspurs defended their sole leadership with their fifth consecutive win in the championship from their match against Kercem Ajax.  The Hotspurs paved the way to the victory with two goals scored during the first half and made sure of the three points with a third goal scored midway through the second half.  Kercem tried hard to share play with their opponents but compromised most of their possibilities to obtain a positive result by conceding a goal during the first minute of play and by also being erratic in their finishing.  Kercem’s goal scored in this match was the first goal conceded by the Hotspurs so far in the championship.

The Hotspurs opened the score after just 57 seconds of play when Christian Mercieca entered Kercem’s area from the flank and from his low cross Elton Da Silva pushed the ball into an open goal.  The Ajax tried to produce a reaction and on 13 minutes a low shot by Andrew Mizzi was neutralised by goalie Adrian Parnis.  The Hotspurs could have doubled the score on 22 minutes but a shot by Emiliano Lattes, following an action with John Camilleri, ended inches wide.  On 31 minutes Kercem lost a golden scoring opportunity when Ognjen Rolovic incredibly lifted over the crossbar an inviting low cross by Alen Haska.  Four minutes later the Hotspurs had an attempt by Henrique Maciel that missed the target and on 36 minutes the Citizens scored their second goal when Elton Da Silva entered Kercem’s territory with a personal action and netted with a low drive as the goalkeeper left his position in an attempt to clear the danger.

Kercem seemed more adventurous during the opening stages of the second period and reduced the deficit on 50 minutes through Ognjen Rolovic who pushed the ball to the post and inside the net following a cross by Alen Haska.  The Hotspurs were not demoralised and regained command of play for the rest of the match.  On the hour mark the Hotspurs were also through a shot by Emiliano Lattes that ended wide and on 67 minutes they regained the two-goal lead when the referee awarded a free kick for a foul by Aleksander Komljenovic and Andrew Mizzi on Elton Da Silva; and Henrique Maciel placed in goal direct from the free kick.  Victoria’s Elton Da Silva concluded badly on 69 minutes after receiving from Christian Mercieca and on 79 minutes Kercem replied with a free kick by Ognjen Rolovic that was well saved by goalie Adrian Parnis.  One minute later Kercem ended with a player less on the field as Marlon Mamo was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for handling the ball inside Victoria’s area and on 88 minutes the Hotspurs could have sealed the victory with another goal but John Camilleri had an attempt form close distance that was blocked to a corner by goalie John Paul Cassar.

Referee: Emanuel Grech
