MATCH REPORT

Sannat Lions maintained their strong challenge for promotion with a convincing 5-1 win over Xaghra United.  With the points obtained Sannat moved over Munxar Falcons at the top of the table, the latter however have a game in hand.  The match was conditioned by strong wind but despite the difficult conditions Sannat dominated over their opponents where their strikers Antoine Camilleri and Oliver Farrugia distinguished themselves by scoring the five goals of their side between them.

Sannat had the wind blowing in their favour during the first period and the conditions therefore made it easier for them to put pressure on Xaghra’s rear guard.  Sannat opened the score on 10 minutes through a header by Oliver Farrugia following a free kick by Matthew Portelli.  On 16 minutes Sannat went again close to scoring but a good shot by Franci Kosova was partially saved by goalie Frankie Azzopardi.  Sannat however doubled the score two minutes later with a goal scored by Antoine Camilleri who passed through three direct opponents before depositing the ball in goal.  Sannat continued to dominate the match and increased their lead on 37 minutes when Oliver Farrugia passed to Antoine Camilleri, the latter entered the area and placed the ball behind goalie Frankie Azzopardi.  The same goalkeeper denied Sannat from adding another goal on 42 minutes when he turned to a corner a good shot by Franci Kosova.

After the break Xaghra failed to produce a reaction and in the first minute of play of the second period, Sannat were dangerous through a shot by Franci Kosova that ended just wide.  Xaghra replied on 62 minutes with a shot from long distance by Gabriele Farrugia that was saved with difficulty to a corner by goalie Owen Attard. From the resultant corner kick by the same Farrugia, the ball hit the crossbar and the defence cleared the danger.  Xaghra scored their consolation goal on 67 minutes with a strike by Adrian Xiberras who concluded in goal after receiving from Milorad Janjius.  Sannat re-established the three goal lead on 79 minutes when Oliver Farrugia placed in goal with a low shot after receiving from Franci Kosova.  Xaghra replied minutes later with a shot form long distance by Gabriele Farrugia that ended just wide.  On 90 minutes Sannat were awarded a penalty for a foul by Gabriele Farrugia on Joseph Zammit and Antoine Camilleri sealed the victory by scoring the fifth goal with his shot from the spot kick.
