MATCH REPORT

In the last match from the first round of the division II campaign, Qala Saints obtained a 3-0 win over Oratory Youths and with the points obtained the Maroons moved away from the bottom of the table.  This was also Qala’s second consecutive win so that they managed to overcome a very difficult start in the league where they conceded three consecutive defeats from their first three matches. Qala’s win was well deserved as they were more effective in their offensive play and paved the way to the win with two goals scored during the first half.  On the other hand Oratory disappointed in this match. They were aiming to obtain a win against a less quoted opponent in an attempt to keep close to the top positions on the table. However, the Youths were overconfident in their approach, failed to produce a reaction as they conceded the first goal and also became nervous to the point that they ended the match with a player less on the field.

During the opening minutes of the match play took place in the midfield as the striker were well controlled by the respective defensive departments.  The first serious attempt at goal arrived on 17 minutes by Qala’s Oliver Farrugia who had an overhead kick form the edge of the area that was neutralized by goalie Richard Sammut.  Midway through the first half Oratory had a good patch of play and seemed in a position to take control of play. The Youths were also dangerous on 22 minutes through a strike from outside the area by Manuel Buttigieg that ended just high and one minute later Qala’s goalie Omar Xuereb was well placed to save a shot from outside the area by Francesco Cini.  Qala opened the score on 33 minutes through a shot by Samuel Sillato from an angled position that took a deflection by the defense and the ball surprised goalie Richard Sammut.  Three minutes later Qala doubled the score when Oratory’s defense failed to clear the ball from the goalmouth following a header by Chris Gafa from a corner kick by Frank Attard and the ball fell to Joseph Buttigieg who netted easily with a low shot.

After the break Oratory’s reaction was sterile and Qala continued to keep their area clear from danger without difficulties.  On 58 minutes Qala were again dangerous through a shot by substitute Jake Mifsud that ended just wide and on 63 minutes the Youths were reduced to ten players when Keith Farrugia was sent off for a foul in the midfield on Martin Buttigieg.  Qala practically sealed the win with the third goal that arrived on 73 minutes through a direct free kick by Oliver Farrugia.  Oratory could have reduced the score during the final minutes of the match.  On 87 minutes a shot by substitute Joseph Xerri was well saved by Qala’s keeper Omar Xuereb and in the first minute of stoppage time a strike by Oratory’s skipper Thiago Melo Figuerero Dos Santos was stopped by the post.

Referee: Jo-Anna Vassallo
